NASHVILLE, Tenn., September 24, 2026 — A tractor-trailer driver’s arrest following a crash on Interstate 40 in Knoxville does not necessarily answer the question of what caused the wreck, according to Tennessee truck accident attorney Keith Williams.

The crash occurred on September 22 at approximately 5:36 a.m., when a tractor-trailer driver from North Carolina allegedly hydroplaned on I-40, crossed three lanes of traffic and struck the concrete median several times before sideswiping a Nissan driven by a 28-year-old woman.

The woman was injured in the collision.

Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers charged the tractor-trailer driver with failure to exercise due care. However, Williams said determining why the truck lost control will require a closer examination of the circumstances leading up to the crash.

“Simply saying that a truck hydroplaned does not necessarily explain why the crash happened,” said Williams of the Keith Williams Law Group. “Investigators need to look at the truck, the driver and the conditions at the time of the crash to determine whether other factors contributed.”

Williams said investigators should consider whether the tractor-trailer was traveling too fast for the conditions, whether there were mechanical problems, and whether the driver was properly qualified and operating the vehicle safely.

“Was the truck traveling at a safe speed for the weather and road conditions? Were the tires, brakes and other components properly maintained? Was the driver properly trained and qualified to operate the vehicle? Was there any impairment involved?” Williams said. “Those are questions that need to be answered before we can determine what caused this crash.”

Williams said commercial truck crashes can require a more extensive investigation than a typical passenger-vehicle collision because investigators may need to examine the truck’s maintenance history, driver records, hours-of-service information and other evidence.

“When a commercial truck crosses multiple lanes of traffic and strikes another vehicle, the consequences can be devastating,” Williams said. “A thorough investigation is necessary to determine exactly what happened and whether anything could have been done to prevent the collision.”
