NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Two small plane crashes in the same Tennessee county within three days are raising new questions about aircraft maintenance and whether mechanical issues played a role.
The latest crash occurred on July 2, when a small aircraft reportedly lost power before crashing into a field near Austin Boulevard in Macon County. The pilot successfully deployed the aircraft's emergency parachute system, and neither of the two people on board was injured.
The incident followed another crash on June 30, when a small plane carrying three people crashed shortly after takeoff in Macon County. One passenger was injured.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating both crashes.
While investigators have not determined what caused either accident, aviation attorney Keith Williams, founder of the Keith Williams Law Group, says maintenance records will likely be among the first areas investigators examine.
"One of the key questions investigators will ask is whether these aircraft received proper inspections and maintenance before takeoff," Williams said. "Mechanical failures don't happen in a vacuum. Investigators will closely examine maintenance logs, repair history and whether any known issues were missed. Preventive maintenance remains one of the most important safeguards in aviation."
Williams, who has represented clients in aviation accident cases nationwide, said it is too early to draw conclusions about either crash but noted that multiple incidents in the same area over a short period naturally draw attention to aircraft safety practices.
Williams is available to discuss:
● What investigators look for after an aircraft loses power
● The role maintenance records play in NTSB investigations
● Common maintenance issues that can contribute to general aviation accidents
● Why preventive maintenance is critical for private aircraft safety
In addition to his practice, Williams is the Past Chair of the American Association for Justice’s Aviation Litigation Section, and he is a member of the Aviation and Space Law Committee of the American Bar Association’s Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section. Mr. Williams is also a member and past president of the Tennessee Trial Lawyers Association.
