Dr. Barbara Knox, MD, is a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Florida and a board-certified expert in General and Child Abuse Pediatrics.

Dr. Barbara Knox is one of the most respected names in the field of child abuse pediatrics. As a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Florida College of Medicine, Jacksonville, Barbara Knox MD leads both clinical work and research focused on child maltreatment. Her work is grounded in decades of training, practical experience, and a deep commitment to protecting vulnerable children.

You see this commitment through her work with the UF-First Coast Child Protection Team, where she serves as a physician evaluating some of the most difficult and painful cases of child abuse. She doesn't stop at medical evaluations. As the Principal Investigator of multiple grants and contracts, she actively directs efforts to gather data and improve understanding around child maltreatment. Dr. Barbara Knox also trains the next generation of child abuse pediatricians through her role as Fellowship Director of the Child Abuse Pediatrics Fellowship and the joint Child Abuse Pediatrics/Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship.

Her career began with a medical degree from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. From there, she completed a residency in General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. That was followed by a focused fellowship in Child Abuse Pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Dr. Barbara Knox is board certified in both General Pediatrics and Child Abuse Pediatrics.

Her research goes beyond the surface. While many pediatricians focus on symptoms or treatment, Barbara Knox MD has turned her attention toward a hidden and brutal form of abuse, child torture. She has spent years studying this form of maltreatment and has identified patterns of physical and psychological harm that go unnoticed in many traditional assessments.

She doesn’t just talk about research. She applies it. Her studies help shape how professionals across the country and around the world; identify and respond to severe child abuse. Her publications include work on burns from abuse, abusive head trauma, and, most recently, expanded insights on child torture. Each piece of work serves as a guidepost for others working in this field. Her findings are used by physicians, social workers, investigators, and child protection professionals who rely on clear, fact-based knowledge to make informed decisions in high-stakes situations.

If you're someone who works in education, health care, or law enforcement, you know how complex these cases can be. You also know that having solid, evidence-based guidance is essential. That’s what Dr. Barbara Knox brings. Her work helps teams respond faster and more effectively, with clearer protocols and better recognition of warning signs.

What sets Dr. Barbara Knox apart is not just her experience or research, but her willingness to confront the darkest parts of child maltreatment. She doesn’t avoid the hardest questions. She goes where the data leads, even when the findings are difficult to process or present. Her focus on torture as a form of abuse opens new paths for recognition and protection of victims who often remain unseen.

Through every aspect of her work, Dr. Barbara Knox continues to push for better systems and deeper understanding. Her goal is simple: to make sure no child slips through the cracks. You may never hear the names of the children she helps, and they may never know the extent of her impact, but her efforts have shaped the outcome of hundreds of cases and will continue to do so.

Severe cases of abuse are often difficult to identify early. Many victims are isolated, silenced, or punished for speaking up. That's why Dr. Knox’s research matters. She focuses on creating systems that see what others overlook. She wants you; whether you're a teacher, doctor, counselor, or investigator, to have the skills and knowledge you need to take the right step at the right time.

Dr. Barbara Knox doesn’t just work in the field of child protection. She shapes it. Through education, research, and case work, she continues to raise awareness about the extreme forms of child abuse that are often ignored or misunderstood. She gives her students, colleagues, and law enforcement teams better ways to protect the children you serve.

You don't need to be a specialist to benefit from her work. If you’re in any position of trust or care around children, her research helps you understand what abuse can really look like and what you can do when you suspect it. Her approach is clear, direct, and based on facts. It’s what you need when your decisions affect a child’s future.

By facing the hardest parts of child maltreatment directly, Dr. Barbara Knox is helping to create a world where no children are hurt, more victims are heard, and more professionals are prepared to act. Her work is a call to pay attention, to take action, and to never underestimate what’s at stake when it comes to child abuse.
