London, UK. Siperb, a UK-registered WebRTC-to-SIP softphone platform, has detailed how it connects a real-time AI voice agent to ordinary SIP phone calls, and how the same agent also answers customers on WhatsApp, Telegram and email as one continuous conversation.

Founder Conrad De Wet demonstrated the system at this year's OpenSIPS Summit. Calls reach the agent with end-to-end latency of around 150 milliseconds on a route through the UK to OpenAI's infrastructure. According to De Wet, most of that delay is network transit rather than processing.

Incoming calls, including WhatsApp calls, terminate on Siperb's session border controller and pass through a small Asterisk array before reaching OpenAI's SIP endpoint. The Asterisk layer provides the back-to-back user agent functions needed for call transfers and other mid-call operations. A webhook on AWS Lambda notifies a Node.js controller, which answers the call through OpenAI's API and gives the agent its opening instruction.

In the demonstration the agent recognised the caller, confirmed his authentication and queried the Siperb platform during the call, listing his devices, reporting which were online and listing his connections. Siperb maps each customer's user ID to a conversation on every channel, so a caller can continue a conversation that began in a chat or by email without starting again.

De Wet's view is that speech recognition and dialogue are now services a small team can call, and that the open question is governance: which tools an agent may use, what it may change and which decisions it can make without a person.
