Google AI Overview vs. Organic Rankings: What the Data Shows

Posted January 14, 2026 by Katie_H

Serpstat, a search marketing platform, has released an extensive research report analyzing the rise of AI Overviews (AIO) in Google Search.

By tracking over 1 billion keywords and 35 million AI-generated answers, the study reveals a fundamental shift in how businesses are discovered online.

As Google continues rolling out its generative AI search experience, Serpstat’s data shows:

- 27% of Google SERPs now feature AI Overviews, up from 0.01% one year ago.
- 90% of AI-cited sources are not in the organic Top 20, breaking the traditional SEO playbook.
- Reddit, Quora, and YouTube lead as source domains, showing Google’s emphasis on community content and user experience.
- Long-tail queries (10+ words) are 3x more likely to trigger an AI answer than short queries.

“AI Overviews are more than a feature — they signal Google’s move toward generative search as the default,” said Kateryna Hordiienko, AI Marketer at Serpstat. “Businesses that restructure their content strategy around AI visibility — not just rankings — will future-proof their traffic.”
