India’s car market tells a clear story about sedans these days. They held strong for years as family favorites. Then SUVs started to take over around 2020. SIAM data shows passenger car sales at 17.47 lakh units for FY 2023-24. That number fell to 15.49 lakh units the following year. Total passenger vehicles rose to 42.19 lakh units in FY 2023-24. They came up from 38.90 lakh the year prior. SUVs and utility vehicles pushed ahead from 20.04 lakh to 25.21 lakh units in that period. By mid-2024 SUVs claimed over half the market at 52 percent. Sedans saw their share shrink more with each passing month.
SUVs become a choice for extra height and better visibility over uneven roads. For many families, it made everyday trips a lot simpler. Compact SUVs began to take away buyers from smaller sedans. Sedans haven’t lost all their admirers. They feel more comfortable on the road and give extra room in the back. Models like the Maruti Dzire CNG remained steady sellers, especially with taxis thanks to their fuel economy and large boot.
CY 2025 brought mixed signs per FADA reports. Total vehicle sales reached 28.16 million units, a 7.71 percent increase from the previous year. Utility vehicles contributed 27.97 lakh units in FY 2024-25. Passenger cars fell slightly.
Some compact sedans performed well. Maruti sold 18,084 units of the Dzire in May 2025 and recorded a 12.6 percent rise. Hyundai sold 5,225 units of the Aura and achieved a 17.87 percent increase from the same month last year.
The market was tough for midsize sedans, and Honda City sales slipped 29 percent early in 2025 with 5,076 units sold. Hyundai sold 7,622 units of the Verna after a 33 percent drop. Volkswagen sold 12,455 units of the Virtus with 9 percent gain. Maruti sold 4,521 units of the Ciaz and registered a 7 percent increase.
While we might not see a drastic jump in sales, the upcoming facelifts of the Honda City, Hyundai Verna, and Volkswagen Slavia could still contribute to some growth in the market. The Tesla Model 3 is also expected to arrive, and the Skoda Superb could also join the market. Most of the changes this year seem to be more updates and less new launches.
Even with these changes, sedans will still stay relevant. They share the road with SUVs in growing market. The numbers show that people's tastes are changing. While the sedan era is getting smaller. But it's not disappearing. Sedans are still useful for taxi fleets and company cars. While there are still loyal followers of this body type, they continue to embrace sedans.
