KP Dermatology Identifies the Type of Pigmentation Before Deciding on Picosecond Laser in Thane

The clinic treats melasma as a long-term condition and uses laser only where the pigment is suited to it, citing the risk of darkening on Indian skin.

KP Dermatology in Vasant Vihar, Thane West, diagnoses the type and cause of a patient's pigmentation before choosing between picosecond laser, other laser settings, peels or topical treatment, on the basis that dark spots from sun, acne, melasma, hormones and irritation behave differently and some worsen if treated aggressively.
The clinic's laser pigmentation treatment in Thane runs on two platforms, the Candela PicoWay picosecond laser and the Fotona TimeWalker. Where the pigment is suited to laser, settings are chosen for the specific concern and skin tone. In other cases, a gentle resurfacing or rejuvenation approach, a peel or targeted topical products may be safer than a session aimed directly at the pigment.
"Half the patients who come in asking for laser for pigmentation have melasma, and melasma does not like heat," said Dr Prratyush More, MBBS, DDVL, Dermatologist, KP Dermatology. "Fire a strong laser at it on brown skin and you can make it darker. The picosecond laser earns its place because it works with shorter pulses and less heat, which lowers that risk, but the first job is still to find out what the pigment is."
Melasma is managed for long-term control, since it can return with sunlight, heat, hormonal change and inconsistent skincare. Superficial spots tend to respond sooner, while melasma and post-acne marks follow a slower plan. Patients may be asked to prepare the skin for some weeks with sunscreen and pigment-control products, and to avoid tanning, waxing and sun-sensitising medicines before treatment. After a session, mild redness or flaking can occur, and treated areas may look darker for a short time before improving. Any spot that changes in size, shape or colour, or bleeds, is examined medically before any cosmetic treatment.
