Late in 2017 the FDA announced that kratom represented a public health warning. The announcement alarmed advocates, consumers, and people who are looking to help relieve the nation's opioid crisis.

The coalition of lawmakers led by Jared Polis, a Democrat from Colorado, argue that kratom is a natural alternative to opioids. They hold, that at the very least kratom should be studied and understood before a reactionary ban takes place.
