Bauxite Price Trend August 2026: China & India Rates

Latest bauxite price trend for August 2026, with CIF China and FOB India rates, key cost drivers, and what buyers should track next.

Noida, India, October 29, 2026: What does a USD 9.00 gap really tell you? In August 2026, bauxite was assessed at USD 64.00 per dry metric ton (DMT) in China on a CIF basis, while India’s quote came in at USD 73.00 per DMT on an FOB basis. Look closer, though, and the headline numbers aren’t quite comparable.

Why the two prices can’t be compared directly

CIF means the price already includes freight and insurance up to the destination port. FOB stops once the cargo is loaded at the origin port. Same commodity, same month, but two very different points in the journey. Add shipping to India’s FOB figure and the real landed difference could shift noticeably. Buyers who compare the raw quotes without adjusting for this often end up with a skewed picture of which market is actually cheaper.

The practical fix is simple. Convert both prices to the same incoterm before building any cost model.

What’s moving bauxite prices

Bauxite isn’t as jumpy as oil-linked commodities, but it’s far from static. A few drivers matter most:

Mining output. Guinea and Australia supply a big share of global bauxite. Bad weather, labor trouble or a change in export rules there can reach Asian import prices fast.
Refinery demand. Most bauxite ends up in alumina refineries. When refinery runs pick up in China or India, ore demand follows.
Freight. Dry bulk rates have their own rhythm. Fuel costs and vessel availability can widen or narrow the CIF-FOB gap even if mine-gate prices don’t budge.
Policy. Royalty hikes or export duties in producing countries have rattled the market before. Indonesia is the usual example.

What procurement teams should take from this

Treat the August 2026 data as a starting point, not a verdict. Freight changes week to week, so a quote that looks sharp today may not look so sharp a month later. And price isn’t everything. Supplier track record, port handling capacity, contract terms and batch quality all affect the final cost. A cheap quote with late shipments isn’t cheap.

Where the market could go next

Nobody can call it with confidence, and that’s the honest answer. Still, China’s alumina capacity suggests import demand will stay firm, and India, despite its domestic reserves, is likely to keep buying overseas too. Two things deserve the closest watch: supply disruptions in Guinea and the direction of freight rates.
