Lakeland Veterinary Hospital, a locally owned, woman-led practice that has served the Brainerd Lakes Region for more than 40 years, is providing full-service veterinary care for dogs and cats at its Baxter hospital. Guided by the idea of caring for pets like family, the AAHA-accredited team combines preventive medicine, in-house diagnostics, surgery, and specialty treatments for pets at every life stage.
Wellness exams and vaccinations form the foundation of care, supported by dedicated services for puppies, kittens, and senior pets. In-house testing and diagnostics help the veterinary team identify health concerns quickly, while ultrasound technology adds detail for more complex cases. Surgical and dental services address needs from routine procedures to oral health, and laser therapy is available as a specialty treatment. Staff also receive Fear Free training, an approach intended to reduce stress for pets during their visits.
Convenience extends beyond the exam room. The hospital offers boarding and grooming, and clients can request appointments and view their pet’s information through a free app. When concerns arise outside regular business hours, VetTriage video telehealth is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for a small fee, giving owners access to guidance when they need it most. Financing through CareCredit and an online client education library also help owners plan for and understand their pet’s care.
Dr. Deb Piepgras, DVM, the hospital’s director and owner, describes the practice as “committed to helping pets live healthier, happier lives.” A University of Minnesota graduate, Dr. Piepgras earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 2000 and began her career at Lakeland that same year. Born and raised in the area, she now leads the hospital alongside Dr. Jonah, DVM, and Dr. Aletta, DVM, and has a particular passion for diagnosing and treating sick or injured pets who cannot explain what is wrong.
Lakeland has held AAHA accreditation since 1999, a voluntary distinction for animal hospitals. AAHA experts regularly evaluate the hospital against nearly 900 standards covering areas such as record-keeping, laboratory testing, surgery, sedation, preventive care, dentistry, medication handling, and cleanliness. The practice, which has operated from its current building since 2000, also says it has been voted the best in the Brainerd Lakes.
