For too long, women have been told—directly and indirectly—that we are not enough. Not thin enough, not ambitious enough, not present enough, not young enough. But here’s the truth: we are already enough.
To rise, grow, and thrive, we must give ourselves permission to embrace change, stumble without shame, and see every setback as a stepping stone to growth. Failure is not the end of the road—it’s the beginning of wisdom.
And yet, the journey is rarely simple. Many women describe the fragility they feel when their sense of identity shifts through motherhood. Others wrestle with the crushing anxiety of comparison—measuring themselves against airbrushed, unrealistic body types and impossible standards. And as we enter peri-menopause and beyond, society primes us with fear rather than preparing us with knowledge, respect, and empowerment.
Fear of failure. Fear of not fitting in. Fear of being judged. These are heavy loads to carry. But when women lift each other up—when we share experiences, knowledge, and courage—we honour not only ourselves but the collective power of women everywhere.
My career and personal passions have always been bound up with creating spaces for women to thrive. To encourage them to recognise their worth and claim it for themselves. Whether it was working on the frontline with women tortured in Papua New Guinea, supporting survivors of domestic abuse or managing people for growth within corporate settings, women have always been a priority focus for me.
I work currently for Positive Changes Scotland, a social enterprise dedicated to working with women who have experienced the Justice System, equipping them with skills, training and wellbeing support as they reintegrate into society. Through our brand Chocolate & Grace we help them to build confidence as they make our artisan chocolates, which are sold to support our work.
Too often, our women face systemic barriers that silence their potential: stigma that lingers long after a sentence is served, judgment that overshadows their efforts to rebuild, and trauma that is compounded when society refuses to let them move forward. When we stigmatise, condemn, and lock people out of opportunities, we don’t just punish individuals—we impoverish our communities.
True change is born not from punishment, shame, or exclusion, but from compassion, dignity, respect, and hope. By believing in women’s capacity to rise—through every season, every challenge, every stumble—we build a future where no one is defined by fear, but by their courage to grow.
And so we find ourselves in a bustling kitchen in Stirling, Scotland. Here the aroma of melting cocoa lingers, something more profound than chocolate is being crafted. Chocolate & Grace is not simply about indulgence; it is about empowerment, dignity, and rewriting futures.
At its heart, this initiative provides women—many with lived experience of the justice system—a safe, supportive space to heal, connect, and grow. Women describe the empowerment they feel when they are truly valued, treated with respect, and given the agency to rebuild their lives. Here, they are not defined by past mistakes but celebrated for their resilience, strength, and capacity for transformation.
Isolation is one of the silent challenges faced by many women leaving the justice system. Chocolate & Grace breaks that cycle by fostering community, reducing loneliness, and encouraging meaningful relationships. In doing so, it helps rebuild lives and, crucially, reduces reoffending—creating a positive ripple effect across society. The impact is not only personal but economic: lives rebuilt mean less strain on the public purse and a healthier, more connected community.
Every chocolate made is infused with purpose. Behind each truffle or bar is a story of hope, courage, and determination. Alongside training and employment opportunities, the program offers trauma-informed support and a platform for women’s voices to be heard, acknowledged, and amplified. The women are credited not as passive recipients of help, but as active changemakers who demonstrate extraordinary commitment to transformation.
Chocolate & Grace is proof that with compassion, respect, and opportunity, cycles can be broken. It is a movement that blends social impact with sweet creativity—reminding us that true empowerment is not given but cultivated, one act of grace, one piece of chocolate, one woman at a time.
