The Order of Marcus Aurelius, a contemporary Stoic chivalric organisation devoted to the cultivation of virtue and the promotion of cosmopolitan ethics, has formally announced the adoption of Esperanto as an additional working language of the Order. The decision reflects the organisation’s ongoing commitment to fostering unity, mutual understanding, and philosophical dialogue across cultural and linguistic boundaries.
Founded in 2022 by Hungarian-Croatian nobleman Count Miklos Cseszneky, the Order draws inspiration from Marcus Aurelius and the enduring principles of Stoic philosophy. Its mission is rooted in the pursuit of wisdom, justice, courage, and temperance, while encouraging members to embrace the Stoic vision of a universal human community.
Announcing the decision, Grand Master Count Cseszneky—himself an author in Esperanto—highlighted the deep philosophical harmony between the language and the Order’s intellectual foundations. He noted that Esperanto, conceived as a neutral and inclusive means of international communication, embodies ideals that closely parallel the Stoic concept of cosmopolitanism, often described as the notion of a shared human citizenship transcending national divisions. In his statement, Count Miklos Cseszneky emphasised that the ethical spirit underlying Esperanto aligns naturally with the Stoic understanding of humanity as a single moral community governed by reason and mutual respect.
The Order has traditionally maintained Latin and Classical Greek as its official ceremonial languages, reflecting its reverence for classical antiquity and the intellectual heritage of Stoicism. At the same time, its working languages—English, French, Spanish, and Hungarian—have supported the practical needs of its international membership. With the addition of Esperanto, the Order seeks to further strengthen its internal cohesion and enhance communication among members across different regions of the world, while symbolically reaffirming its dedication to impartiality and cultural inclusivity.
This development represents not merely a linguistic expansion but a deliberate philosophical statement. By embracing Esperanto, the Order of Marcus Aurelius underscores its commitment to the Stoic ideal of the cosmopolis—a universal commonwealth of rational beings bound together by shared ethical principles rather than divided by language or geography. The leadership of the Order expressed confidence that this step will encourage deeper collaboration, broaden participation, and reinforce the organisation’s identity as a truly international fraternity grounded in classical wisdom and modern relevance.
The Order of Marcus Aurelius continues to engage in educational, charitable, and cultural initiatives aimed at promoting Stoic philosophy in contemporary life. Inspired by the legacy of Marcus Aurelius and guided by timeless virtues, the Order seeks to cultivate individuals who are not only disciplined in thought and action but also committed to the service of a broader human community.
