A Saudi restaurant chain upgraded to custom grease-resistant paper bags, reducing delivery complaints by 88%, maintaining crispy fried food, and ensuring uninterrupted monthly packaging supply.

As food delivery continues to expand across the Middle East, restaurant brands are placing greater emphasis on packaging that protects food quality throughout transportation. For fried chicken and fast-food operators, preserving crispness, preventing grease leakage, and maintaining stable packaging supply have become essential to delivering a consistent customer experience.

A leading quick-service restaurant chain with more than 120 locations across Saudi Arabia recently upgraded its takeaway paper bag program to address these operational challenges. By introducing customized grease-resistant paper bags and strengthening production capacity, the company significantly improved delivery quality while ensuring uninterrupted packaging supply.

Delivery Growth Revealed Packaging Limitations

The restaurant group serves high volumes of fried chicken, French fries, burgers, and other takeaway meals through dine-in, drive-thru, and online delivery channels.

As order volumes increased, three packaging issues became increasingly difficult to manage.

The first involved moisture retention.

Freshly fried products release large amounts of steam immediately after packaging. Conventional paper bags trapped moisture inside, causing condensation to form during transportation. Within approximately twenty minutes, crispy chicken and fries frequently lost their texture, generating customer complaints about inconsistent food quality.

The second issue was grease penetration.

Existing paper bags provided limited oil resistance, allowing grease to migrate through the paper and stain the outside of the bag. Customers occasionally reported greasy hands, damaged clothing, and unpleasant delivery experiences.

Finally, the restaurant group struggled with supply reliability.

Monthly demand exceeded 1.5 million paper bags, yet previous suppliers lacked sufficient manufacturing capacity. Packaging shortages became common during promotional campaigns and seasonal demand peaks, disrupting normal restaurant operations.

A Packaging System Designed for Fried Food

To improve delivery performance, a customized paper packaging solution was developed specifically for fried food applications.

The project introduced Kit 8 food-grade grease-resistant kraft paper, offering one of the highest commercially available grease-resistance levels while maintaining a paper-based structure suitable for foodservice applications.

Rather than relying on plastic barriers, the paper itself provided excellent resistance to oil migration, helping bags remain clean even when carrying freshly prepared fried products.

Engineers also optimized the bag structure to improve ventilation.

By carefully refining the folded top opening and utilizing the natural breathability of kraft paper fibers, excess steam was able to escape while heat remained inside the package.

Repeated testing demonstrated that fried chicken retained more than 80% of its crisp texture after approximately thirty minutes inside the bag, significantly improving delivery performance.

Supporting Large-Scale Restaurant Operations

Packaging quality alone could not solve the customer's operational challenges.

Reliable manufacturing capacity was equally important.

Three dedicated automated paper bag production lines were assigned to the project, each capable of producing more than 150,000 bags per day.

The complete monthly order volume of approximately 1.5 million bags was consistently manufactured within about twelve days.

To further strengthen supply reliability, logistics planning was coordinated with long-term shipping partners serving both Jeddah Port and Riyadh, ensuring stable monthly deliveries even during Ramadan and other peak business periods.

Food Safety and Regulatory Compliance

As food-contact packaging standards continue to evolve, material safety remained a key priority throughout the project.

Production utilized fluorescent-free kraft paper together with imported low-VOC soy-based water inks manufactured under controlled production conditions.

Supporting documentation included FDA food-contact compliance together with SGS food safety testing, allowing the customer to satisfy international packaging requirements while maintaining confidence in product safety.

Results That Extended Beyond Packaging

Following implementation, customer feedback showed measurable improvements.

Complaints related to soggy fried chicken and softened French fries on major Saudi food delivery platforms declined by 88%, helping the restaurant maintain a more consistent takeaway experience.

Operational reliability also improved significantly.

Throughout more than six months of cooperation, including the high-demand Ramadan season, monthly packaging deliveries remained on schedule with a 100% on-time delivery record.

Encouraged by the success of the paper bag program, the restaurant group expanded the partnership to include burger wrapping paper, takeaway napkins, and paper straws through a consolidated sourcing strategy.
