Memdeklaro is a free and open source framework for creating a self-declaration of identity, without relying on a government, birth parents or other centralized third party. Memdeklaro explores the proposition that a person can retain a meaningful social identity and socioeconomic participation, even in cases where access to legal identity is unavailable.
The project is a philosophical initiative focusing on freedom of identity and universal access to self-declared identification. Conventional centralized identity systems can exclude people who lack government-issued identification or cannot safely use it, which can limit access to social and economic participation. Self-declaration provides a way for people to express a self-chosen name and personal ties without requiring permission from a centralized third party. It can be used as a universally accessible foundation to build connections and reputation in peer-to-peer networks and communities, online and in person.
Users can generate a self-declaration by using the Memdeklaro web app. The user first enters their self-chosen details into the self-declaration form, then clicks on the Generate button. The self-declaration is then instantly available to download. It can be printed by the user as a business card, CR-80 plastic card or PDF printout for physical usage, as well as used digitally as a JPEG file, PDF attachment or self-asserted verifiable credential in JSON-LD format (which must be self-signed by the user).
The Memdeklaro project, generator, templates and related materials are released into the public domain (CC0 Universal / Unlicense). Anyone may download, fork, remix, extend or adapt the materials however they want.
