Nubokind, an Indian baby products brand for infants aged 0 to 12 months, has published a safety guide for parents on teething necklaces and bracelets. The guide explains why paediatric guidance advises against these products, and sets out safer ways to comfort a baby through teething.
Teething necklaces, often made from amber beads, wood or silicone, are widely sold online and are sometimes passed on as a traditional remedy or a thoughtful gift. Many parents buy them in good faith, believing they ease gum pain or keep a baby calm. The concern is not the idea of comfort, but the design. A necklace worn around a baby's neck can pose a strangulation risk, and small beads can break loose and become a choking hazard. The US Food and Drug Administration has issued a public safety warning advising parents not to use teething jewellery for this reason.
The Nubokind guide covers:
- The risks. Why anything worn around a baby's neck, or made of small parts that can come loose, is not suitable for a teething baby, particularly during sleep or when the baby is unsupervised.
- The claims. Why popular beliefs about amber beads releasing soothing substances are not supported by evidence, and why parents should be cautious about health claims made for teething jewellery.
- Safer alternatives. How a single-piece teether made from food-grade silicone, a clean chilled (not frozen) teether, or gentle gum massage with a clean finger can help soothe sore gums.
- What to check before buying. Choosing teethers that are one solid piece with no small parts, easy to clean, made from baby-safe materials, and certified to Indian toy safety standards such as BIS IS 9873.
- When to see a doctor. Signs that discomfort may not be teething, such as high fever or unusual symptoms, and when to speak to a paediatrician.
"Parents who buy a teething necklace are trying to help their baby, and that instinct is exactly right," said Aditya Chopra, Founder of Nubokind. "The problem is that a necklace puts something around a baby's neck and small beads within reach of their mouth. A teether should be the opposite: one solid piece, nothing that can break off, and made from a material that is safe to chew. That is the standard we hold our own products to."
