Nubokind, an Indian baby products brand serving more than 20,000 parents, has published an explainer on BIS IS 9873, the Indian safety standard for toys, and what it means for one of the first products almost every Indian baby puts in their mouth: the teether.

A teether is designed to be chewed for hours a day by an infant whose immune system and digestive tract are still developing. Yet when a parent compares teethers online, the listings look almost identical. Most say "BPA-free" and "food grade". Very few explain what, if anything, has been independently tested, and nothing on a typical marketplace listing lets a parent tell a certified product from an uncertified one.

The explainer covers what BIS certification under IS 9873 actually involves:

- Chemical safety. Certified products are tested for harmful substances, including lead and phthalates, rather than relying on a manufacturer's own label.

- Physical safety. Testing checks for choking hazards, sharp edges and parts that can break off, which matters for a product that will be bitten, dropped and pulled.

- Durability under real use. A teether has to hold up to saliva and daily chewing without tearing or deforming, since a damaged teether can become a choking risk.

- Why labels are not enough. "BPA-free" addresses a single chemical. It says nothing about lead, phthalates, small parts or durability. An imported CE mark certifies against a European standard and is not an Indian certification.

The explainer also shows parents how to check a claim for themselves: a genuinely certified product carries the BIS Standard Mark with a licence number, which can be looked up against the Bureau of Indian Standards' own records.

"Parents assume that if a baby product is on sale, someone has checked it," said Aditya Chopra, Founder of Nubokind. "For many products that is not true, and the listing will never tell you. The fix is simple: look for the BIS mark and a licence number, and check it. A teether goes in your baby's mouth hundreds of times a day. It is worth two minutes."
