Oasis Orthodontics on Why Bite Diagnosis, Not Appearance, Guides the Choice Between Invisalign and Braces

A Markham orthodontist explains that patients who select an orthodontic appliance based on how it looks risk leaving their underlying bite problem unresolved.

When patients select between Invisalign and braces based primarily on which one they can see less easily, they are making a preference decision about appearance, not a clinical one about their bite. That distinction matters, according to an orthodontist based in Markham, because the bite condition being treated determines which appliance can produce a complete outcome.
Aesthetic preference is a recurring factor in consultation discussions but is not, on its own, a clinically valid basis for appliance selection. A bite assessment has to come first.
Invisalign uses a series of custom-fitted removable trays to move teeth incrementally. The system addresses mild and moderate crowding, spacing, and certain bite corrections within the mechanical range that aligner forces can achieve. Where the bite problem involves more significant discrepancies in jaw relationships or requires sustained multi-directional force throughout treatment, fixed braces are the more appropriate tool.
"The question we answer before anything else is what the bite actually looks like," the orthodontist said. "That tells us what the treatment needs to accomplish. Then the appliance is matched to the clinical requirement, not the other way around."
Fixed braces maintain continuous contact with tooth surfaces and allow precise directional force application. This is particularly relevant for overbites, underbites, open bites, and crossbites that require consistent force over the full course of treatment. Removable aligners are worn for the majority of the day but are taken out for eating and hygiene, which means there are regular periods when no force is being applied.
Tooth geometry is a further variable. Some teeth, based on their shape and size, are more reliably moved with fixed brackets than with tray pressure. Where this is the case, aligner-only treatment may not achieve the planned outcome.
Some treatment courses use both appliances in sequence, with diagnostic findings determining when and whether that is necessary.
A full clinical assessment of bite, jaw relationships, and tooth positions typically precedes any appliance recommendation. The results of that assessment, rather than the initial preference expressed at consultation, determine the treatment plan.
