Ohio Primary Care Providers Launch Initiative to Reduce ER Visits Through Preventive Care

A statewide effort aims to lower emergency costs by strengthening access to routine primary care.

Columbus, OH — Sep 5th 2025 – Ohio Primary Care providers are launching a statewide initiative designed to reduce unnecessary emergency room visits by expanding access to preventive and routine care services.

With rising healthcare costs placing a burden on families, the program focuses on connecting patients with timely, consistent care while easing pressure on emergency departments across the state. The initiative comes at a time when Ohio hospitals report increasing strain from non-emergency visits, a trend that drives up costs for both patients and the healthcare system.

Many emergency room visits are the result of conditions that could have been treated earlier in a primary care setting. By encouraging patients to maintain regular checkups, screenings, and chronic condition management, the initiative seeks to prevent avoidable complications that often result in costly hospital visits. Nearly one in three ER visits nationwide involve non-urgent cases—situations that could be safely addressed in a primary care clinic at a fraction of the cost.

“Too many families turn to the ER for health issues that can be managed through regular primary care visits,” said a representative from Ohio Primary Care. “This effort will make care more accessible and help patients get the right treatment at the right time.”

The program will expand services through extended hours, same-day appointments, and walk-in availability at select clinics. Patients will also have access to Ohio Primary Care’s secure online platform to schedule visits, view test results, and receive appointment reminders—helping families stay on track with preventive care. Additionally, mobile outreach units will be introduced in select counties to bring preventive care directly to underserved communities, where a lack of access often leads to higher ER reliance.

This initiative is about more than convenience; it is designed to address the financial challenges tied to unnecessary emergency care. By focusing on prevention and timely treatment, Ohio Primary Care hopes to reduce healthcare costs while improving long-term health outcomes for Ohio residents. Preventable ER visits are estimated to cost the U.S. healthcare system billions of dollars each year, making programs like this a strategic investment in public health.

The effort also expands support for families with services such as vaccinations, wellness visits, and chronic disease management. By strengthening access to comprehensive care, Ohio Primary Care is working to create healthier communities and reduce preventable hospitalizations statewide. Employers across Ohio may also benefit, as more consistent primary care can help reduce employee absenteeism and improve workforce productivity.

The initiative is open to both new and existing patients, with providers in Columbus and across Ohio participating. With a patient-centered approach and a focus on prevention, Ohio Primary Care is committed to helping individuals and families stay healthier while reducing the need for costly emergency care.
