Still Sweet on Chocolate?

Vanilla stole its crown, butter pecan is closing in, and chocolate just took the throne back

Wisconsin, US, October 27, 2026 – Two years ago, the unthinkable happened: chocolate lost its crown. Plain, polite vanilla slipped past it to become America’s favorite ice cream flavor, and for a while the nation’s sweet tooth seemed to be changing its mind.
This year, chocolate is back on top, according to the International Dairy Foods Association’s 2026 ice cream trends survey. But the comeback comes with company.
What no survey measures is the part that makes chocolate different from every other dessert: it is almost never eaten alone. It is the box passed around the table, the bar left on a colleague’s desk, the last square saved for the person who had a rough day.
Favorites rise and fall, but chocolate has held on to something harder to rank. It is how people say “I thought of you.”
That is the idea behind how 123 Greetings https://www.123greetings.com/ is marking National Chocolate Day on October 28: by inviting people to settle the great dessert debate in the most personal way possible, by sending a sweet e-card to the one person they would happily share their last piece with.
“A box of chocolates disappears in an afternoon, but a message someone can reread on a hard day lasts much longer,” said Arvind Kajaria, Founder, 123Greetings.
Ways to celebrate with 123 Greetings
• Send a sweet note to a friend, neighbor or relative you haven’t spoken to in a while
• Pair a card with a real treat, or let the card be the treat
• Add a few words of your own on the message board for others to enjoy
123 Greetings members can send cards on the website and app, and GoPro subscribers send and receive them ad-free.
So, is chocolate still the favorite dessert? The surveys have their say. The rest of us can vote with a card.
