Thane, Maharashtra, India, 5 September 2026: Team Ortho Robotics has published a component by component account of what goes into an artificial knee joint, along with the timing of each stage of surgery and recovery, for patients considering robotic knee replacement at its Thane unit.
The implant has four parts. The femoral component is made of a highly polished strong metal. The tibial component is durable plastic held in a metal tray. The patellar component is plastic. Bone cement fixes those components to the bone.
"Patients are quoted a number for a knee replacement and they have no idea what they are buying, so they compare on price alone, which is the worst possible basis," said Dr Kiran Bhavnani, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Team Ortho Robotics. "If you know there are four parts and what each one does, you can ask a sensible question about which one you are getting."
On timing, the surgery itself takes about 90 to 110 minutes. With preoperative preparation, anaesthesia and recovery, a patient is in the operating room area for three to four hours. Most patients are helped to stand within 12 to 24 hours, walk with a frame or crutches from that point, and walk independently with a stick after one to two weeks. Stitches or staples come out in about two weeks.
Preoperative workup is also set out: medical evaluation, physical examination with the orthopaedic surgeon and physician several weeks ahead, X ray, blood investigations, ECG, 2D echo and urine tests, a dental check up, a cardiology check up, and adjustment of any blood thinning medication on physician advice.
