Team Ortho Robotics Sets Out What Makes Up a Robotic Knee Replacement Bill as the Implant Price Cap Nears Its 15 November Date

The Thane joint replacement team advises patients to ask for the implant, the stay and the investigations as separate lines before comparing quotes.

Team Ortho Robotics, the joint replacement unit at Kaushalya Medical Foundation Trust Hospital in Thane, has advised patients comparing robotic knee replacement surgery cost in India to ask hospitals for an itemised estimate, with the implant, the hospital stay and pre-operative investigations shown separately, as the national ceiling price on knee implants approaches its current end date.
The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority's ceiling prices on orthopaedic knee implants, first notified in 2017, are in force until 15 November 2026 or until further orders. The cap applies to the implant itself, made up of a polished metal femoral component and a plastic tibial component held in a metal tray, and not to the surgeon's fees, theatre time or room charges.
"Two quotes can differ by a lot and both be honest, because they are pricing different things," said Dr Jayesh Nayak, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Team Ortho Robotics. "One includes both knees, one includes a private room, one leaves out the tests. Ask for every line. The implant is the only part with a government ceiling on it, and that is exactly why patients should know which implant they are being quoted for."
Beyond the implant, the bill is shaped by whether one knee or both are replaced, the room category, and the length of stay, which the team puts at two to four days after minimally invasive surgery. Pre-operative work-up includes X-ray, blood and urine tests, an ECG and a 2D Echo, and assessment of other medical conditions several weeks before surgery. The operation itself takes 90 to 110 minutes, with three to four hours in theatre including anaesthesia and recovery.
The team uses the CUVIS robotic system for planning and implant positioning, with patients typically walking four to five hours after surgery.
Patients can request an assessment and estimate for robotic knee replacement surgery at Kaushalya Hospital, Thane.
