Palmetto Animal Hospital welcomes Dr. Laurie Kavanaugh, DVM, to its veterinary team. With more than 35 years of clinical experience spanning shelter medicine, small animal general practice, and emergency medicine, Dr. Kavanaugh brings broad expertise and a focus on integrative care and end-of-life support to the Florence community.
Dr. Kavanaugh earned both her undergraduate degree in Biology and her veterinary degree from the University of Georgia in 1990. Her career has spanned shelter medicine, small animal general practice, and small animal emergency medicine, giving her experience with pets in every stage of life.
Two areas now define her practice: integrative medicine and hospice care. Through Chi University, Dr. Kavanaugh has completed advanced coursework in integrative and alternative veterinary medicine and continues her studies there. She is also a Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Veterinarian, one of a relatively small number of practitioners in the country to hold this designation.

She is also a Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Veterinarian - one of a relatively small number of practitioners in the country to hold this designation. For Dr. Kavanaugh, this credential reflects her belief that the end of a pet's life deserves just as much care, intention, and tenderness as any other stage.
Outside the hospital, Dr. Kavanaugh enjoys fiber and folk arts, including handspinning fiber from her own animals. A lifelong homesteader, she raises angora rabbits, pygora goats, dairy goats, kiko goats, and rex rabbits for fiber and farming. She shares her home with her three adult daughters, five senior dogs, four young Great Pyrenees, eight cats, a macaw, and a pionus parrot. She has been embracing the homesteading lifestyle since her late teens, long before it became a popular trend.
