HOUSTON, Texas – July 20, 2026 – Most homeowners are pretty excited when a kitchen renovation wraps up. Everything is new, everything is clean, and for a while it feels like exactly what they wanted.

Then real life starts happening in the space.

The coffee machine finds its spot. Kids start doing homework at the island. Groceries pile up on the counter. Holiday gatherings happen. That's usually when people figure out what works really well...and what they maybe should have thought about a little longer.

According to QVG, some of the most common renovation regrets aren't the expensive ones. In fact, they're often smaller decisions that seemed easy to skip at the time.

Storage is a good example.

Homeowners almost never complain about having too much storage. The opposite happens more often. Drawers fill up quicker than expected. Small appliances need a place to go. Somehow there always seems to be one cabinet that ends up stuffed with random things nobody knows what to do with.

Another one? Counter space.

It sounds obvious, but during planning people sometimes focus so much on aesthetics that they forget how much room they actually use while cooking. A countertop might look huge on paper. Once the toaster, coffee maker and air fryer show up, it can feel a lot smaller.

Larger kitchen islands continue to be one of the most requested features for that reason. Not because they're trendy, necessarily. People simply use them.

"They become the center of the house whether homeowners planned for that or not," said a spokesperson for QVG. "People eat there, work there, talk there, drop groceries there. We've had clients tell us later they wish they had made the island a little bigger. Honestly, we hear that more often than someone saying they made it too large."

The company has also noticed more homeowners wishing they had included additional electrical outlets during renovations.

Nobody gets excited about outlets during the design phase. That's just reality. But once phones, mixers, blenders, laptops, coffee machines and everything else starts competing for power, opinions tend to change.

Lighting creates similar situations.

Most renovation conversations naturally revolve around countertops, cabinetry and finishes. Lighting sometimes gets pushed down the list. Yet after move-in day, poor task lighting above prep areas is one of the first things homeowners notice.

Not every regret is tied to budget, either.

Quite a few come from assumptions.

People assume they'll have enough storage. They assume they'll only use one appliance at a time. They assume the kitchen island is big enough. Sometimes they're right. Sometimes not really.

What's interesting is that homeowners seem to be approaching renovations a little differently now than they did a few years ago. Design is still important, of course. But more people are asking practical questions upfront. They want to know how the space will function on an ordinary Tuesday night, not just how it will look in photos.

That's probably not a bad shift.
