Delivered by Devon-based playground specialist Rhino Play during the Easter 2026 holidays, the new structure gives the school a flexible space for outdoor lessons, group activities and free play throughout the school day.
The installation provides pupils with a dedicated space for lessons, storytelling, role play and recreation, while requiring no safety surfacing or excavation work. The structure was fixed directly to the existing playground surface, allowing the project to be completed quickly and with minimal disruption to the school’s day-to-day running.
The school's brief was clear: create something far more engaging than a traditional seating area. Staff wanted a focal point that would encourage creativity, support outdoor learning and offer a welcoming space where children could gather throughout the school day.
Rhino Play delivered its Castle Keep Play Castle design, a multi-purpose structure featuring internal seating, a raised deck, traversing walls, role-play features and multiple access points. Designed to encourage both learning and active play, the installation allows teachers to use the space for outdoor lessons while also providing pupils with opportunities for imaginative and physical activity during breaks.
The project reflects a growing trend among schools seeking to maximise the educational value of their outdoor environments. With budgets and available space often limited, many schools are looking for installations that can support learning, wellbeing, social interaction and physical development within a single solution.
Stuart Hunt, Head of Sales at Rhino Play, said:
"Schools increasingly want outdoor features that can serve multiple purposes rather than dedicating valuable space to a single function. Blackpool Primary wanted something that could work as a seating area, outdoor classroom and play feature all at the same time.
"The Castle Keep delivered exactly that. It provides a dedicated learning space, encourages imaginative play and creates a genuine focal point within the playground, all without the need for additional surfacing or major groundworks."
