Karatu, Tanzania — July 21, 2026 — Most people planning a Tanzania trip build their whole itinerary around the animals. Safari Land, a family-run stop between the Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara, is betting there's an audience for something different: a Unique Tanzanian Experience built around art, food, and gemstones instead of game drives.

The site sits a two-hour drive from Arusha, near the town of Karatu. It started as African Galleria, an art gallery, and grew into three brands under one roof — the gallery itself, Ol Mesera Restaurant, and Africa Gems & Jewelers. Brothers Punit and Nish Dodhia run it now, continuing a business their father started.

"People spend three days in a Land Cruiser looking at lions and then fly home without ever tasting real Tanzanian food or meeting the person who carved the piece they bought as a souvenir," said Punit Dodhia, co-founder of Safari Land. "We wanted one place where you actually slow down for an afternoon."

That's the pitch, anyway. Whether it works depends on whether travel agents route people through Karatu at all — it's a detour, not a drive-by.

The activities are hands-on rather than passive: painting workshops with local artists, an ebony carving demonstration from Makonde tribe carvers, a tanzanite tour that follows the stone from mine to finished jewelry, cooking demos covering dishes like choma choma and mchicha, and visits to a school the Dodhia family founded nearby. It's a different shape of local Tanzania tour than the usual safari-and-lodge package — smaller, slower, and centered on people rather than wildlife.

Safari Land also runs the Moyo Mmoja Foundation, which has brought clean drinking water to families in Kibaoni-Manyara and T-Loma village and plants trees with visitors who want to leave something behind other than tire tracks.
For anyone routing through the Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara, or Serengeti, Safari Land is positioning itself as an add-on stop rather than a replacement for the safari itself — something to break up the driving, not compete with it.
