Posted August 8, 2026 by sanatantourist

Sawan is a holy month that gives a chance for the devotees of Lord Shiva to make a Kanwar Yatra to fulfill the wishes of their family members by bringing holy water.

However, simply carrying the Kanwar is not all. You have to follow some Kanwar Yatra rules if you want your journey to be successful and your wishes to come true. In this article, we list down every Kanwar Yatre rule to follow step-by-step.
Besides fulfilling the wishes of family members, the Kanwar Yatra is also considered as a very pure and clean act. That is why, it is one of the most important festivals in Shaivism.
What is Kanwar Yatra and What are its Rules?
Kanwar Yatra is a walking pilgrim journey dedicated to Lord Shiva. Participants called Kanwariyas take holy Ganga water from places such as Haridwar, Gaumukh, and Gangotri, where these rivers are considered sacred.
With this holy water, they then proceed to the Shiva temple in their town or municipality and pour this water on the Shivling in a ritual known as Jalabhishek or ritual offering of water.
This form of pilgrimage cannot be considered a mere tradition; it represents a practice of self-discipline or tapasya. A feeling of devotion, discipline, and service are considered very vital on this way as the devotees undertake their journey.
Kanwar Yatra 2026 Dates and Significance
Kanwar Yatra 2026 got off to a great start at the dawn of the sacred month of Sawan, July 30, falling on a Thursday. The final day of this religious festival and the immersion will take place on Shivratri when the water (Jalabhishek) will be poured upon the holy deity, which will be on August 11, a Tuesday.
The Haridwar, Muzaffarnagar, and Meerut paths are where the biggest congregation of people is experienced Keep in mind that the dates are not the same each year because they depend on the Sawan month of the Hindu calendar so if you are planning your journeys for 2027 or beyond make sure to refer to a authentic Panchang before finalizing your plans.
Kanwar Yatra has very few important rules : one of them is you can't put the Kanwar on the ground, another is you should not consume non-veg food or alcohol. One has to wear fresh saffron clothes, and also offer water to Shivling according to the correct procedure. All these rules help to keep the holy journey pure and untainted, as a devotee who is preparing for this event knows.
Rules Before Starting the Pilgrimage
The most important rules of Kanwar Yatra are :
Do not ever put Kanwar on the ground.
Abstain from non-vegetarian food and intoxicants.
Be dressed in clean saffron colored clothes.
Pour water on the Shivling with proper ritual.
All these rules are meant to preserve the holy nature of the pilgrimage.
Before you set foot on the path of pilgrimage, you must do Shiva puja at home and make a vow or pledge of Sankalp very seriously. This shows your intention to do the pilgrimage in a devout and complete manner.
A majority of the Kanwariyas fast for one day before they take out the Kanwari. It is also considered a good omen if they get blessings of the elders in the family.
After you have made a Sankalp, only then take your Kanwars; if you leave it at any point in between it will be considered as a bad omen.
Be in clothes either freshly worn or washed.
Make sure that you have with you medicines, water and a first-aid kit.
Plan your travel route and know where the rest camps will be beforehand.
Rules for Carrying and Walking with the Kanwar
Kanwar is a long stick (mostly made of bamboo) which has two small cans (or containers) filled with water of river Ganga hanging at both ends of it. It has to be borne by the carrier all along the pilgrimage.
Main guideline : Do not ever take off the Kanwar from your shoulders. If you have got to put it down for any reason, you may keep it propped either on a raised stand or on a tree branch.
In this way the holiness of the sacred water is being maintained.
Dietary Rules (What to Eat, What Not to Eat)
All meals taken during the pilgrimage are strictly Sattvic (pure vegetarian) food. Onion; garlic and other Tamasic ingredients are completely avoided.
Non-veg food and drinking alcohol are not allowed at all. Many Kanwariyas during the month of Sawan take only fruits in the form of Phalahar as meals, or they only have one meal a day.
Do's (What to Eat/Drink) Don'ts (What to Avoid)
Sattvic, light food Non-vegetarian food Fruits and juices Alcohol or intoxicants Clean drinking water Stale or unhygienic outside food Light fasting Dishes containing onion and garlic.
Clothing and Behavioral Rules
Kanwariyas generally wear saffron (Bhagwa) clothing. This color symbolizes sacrifice, renunciation, and devotion.
During the journey, refrain from foul language, arguments, or disrespectful conduct. Walking peacefully while chanting "Bol Bam" or "Har Har Mahadev" is the core principle.
Local authorities often issue safety guidelines - such as avoiding carrying hazardous objects. Following these rules is crucial for everyone's safety.
The Correct Method to Perform Jalabhishek
After you approach the temple, the first thing you should do is wash your hands and feet. Then, get yourself positioned before the Shivling with a tranquil and concentrated mindset.
With great deliberation, pour the Ganga water onto the Shivling and, at the same time, repeat the mantra of "Om Namah Shivaya" without pause.
A hasty act of watering or fighting for the front in the crowds of devotees is considered as breaking of the sacred tradition.
Cleanse your hands and feet before entering the temple premises.
Stand in prayerful meditation before the Shivling.
Offer the holy water slowly while chanting mantras.
Finally, accept the Prasad and seek divine blessings.

Common Mistakes Kanwariyas Make
Many first-timers rush along their way of pilgrimage and end up making mistakes. However, the errors are so simple and the pilgrims can avoid them by not going with such speed :
Setting off without planning the route.
Walking long distances without adequate water or light snacks.
Accidentally placing the Kanwar on the ground in crowded or chaotic areas.
Neglecting hygiene and cleanliness at rest stops.
Getting separated from the group and walking alone at night.

Safety and Health Tips
As this is a long walk you will need to treat your feet extra kindly. Wear sturdy walking shoes and avoid wearing slippers or flat sandals which offer no support.
Make sure to stop for some rest every 2, 3 hours and replenish your lost energy through liquids. If you feel a headache or get really tire sit in the shade right away to refresh yourself.
If you are an elderly person or suffer from a certain illness, a physical consultation with a medical expert prior to starting the excursion is absolutely required. Never forget to have your mobile phone with emergency contact written down and medical facilities' whereabouts at your disposal.
