Prince George’s County Drug Policy Coalition Honors Three Outstanding Students Attending Harvard University, George Washington University, and Loyola University Maryland

PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, MD — October 17, 2026 — The Prince George’s County Drug Policy Coalition, Inc. (PGCDPC, Inc.) proudly announces the recipients of its 2026 Empowering Future Leaders Scholarship Awards, recognizing three exceptional students for their academic achievements, leadership potential, and commitment to addressing important issues affecting their communities.

The 2026 scholarship recipients are Sydney Featherstone, Yessica Giron, and Madison Hughes, three promising scholars whose educational journeys reflect the Coalition’s ongoing commitment to investing in the next generation of community leaders.

Since 2012, PGCDPC, Inc. has awarded more than $215,000 in scholarships, helping students pursue higher education while encouraging meaningful discussions about substance abuse prevention, public health, and community responsibility.

Celebrating the 2026 Scholarship Recipients

Sydney Featherstone — Harvard University

Sydney Featherstone will attend Harvard University's School of Government. Her scholarship essay examined the growing normalization of marijuana use and its visibility within residential communities.

Sydney reflected on witnessing young people openly using marijuana in her neighborhood, describing the experience as a meaningful indication of changing attitudes toward substance use.

Her observations highlighted the importance of community awareness, youth education, and continued public dialogue.

Yessica Giron — George Washington University

Yessica Giron will return to George Washington University to continue her academic studies.

In her scholarship essay, Yessica examined how marijuana legalization has influenced public conversations surrounding substance use, health, and criminal justice.

She emphasized the importance of approaching substance use as a public health concern rather than solely a criminal justice issue.

Yessica also discussed concerns about marijuana accessibility among students, highlighting the need for prevention education and responsible community engagement.

Madison Hughes — Loyola University Maryland

Madison Hughes, a 2026 graduate of St. Stephen's & St. Agnes School, will attend Loyola University Maryland to pursue nursing education.

Madison's essay explored the impact of marijuana legalization on communities, including concerns about dispensaries, neighborhood safety, and changing enforcement practices.

She also considered the potential effects of legalization on illegal marijuana sales and minor marijuana-related arrests, demonstrating a thoughtful approach to a complex public policy issue.
