The AAHA-accredited hospital now offers twice-annual wellness exams, bloodwork, and pain management to help aging dogs and cats across Miami-Dade County stay healthy longer.

MIAMI, FLA - South Kendall Animal Hospital, a full-service veterinary practice that has served Miami-Dade County for more than 30 years, has introduced a dedicated Senior Pet Care program to support aging dogs and cats in Palmetto Bay and surrounding communities.

The program shifts wellness visits for senior pets from once a year to twice a year, giving the hospital's veterinary team more opportunities to catch age-related concerns before they become serious. Senior exams include bloodwork to check organ function and overall fitness, along with screening for common conditions such as arthritis and other age-related diseases. When a health issue is identified, the veterinary team builds a treatment plan suited to the pet's age, breed, and lifestyle, with an emphasis on pain management and comfort for pets managing chronic conditions.

The new program reflects South Kendall Animal Hospital's broader approach to preventive, individualized care. As pets age faster than humans, more frequent monitoring allows earlier detection of issues that might otherwise go unnoticed between annual visits, giving pet owners more time to act and more options for treatment. The hospital's veterinary team, which includes Dr. Laura Lantigua, Dr. Mariana Berruecos, and Dr. Megan Rabelo, works directly with pet owners to explain diagnostic results and outline next steps in plain, accessible language.

For many families, the transition into a pet's senior years brings new questions about mobility, appetite, and quality of life. South Kendall Animal Hospital's approach is to address these changes proactively rather than reactively, using bloodwork and physical exams as early indicators rather than waiting for visible symptoms to appear. This is especially relevant for larger breed dogs and cats over the age of seven, who are more prone to developing arthritis, kidney disease, and other age-related conditions that respond best to early intervention.

South Kendall Animal Hospital has held accreditation from the American Animal Hospital Association since 1983, a distinction maintained by only a portion of veterinary practices nationwide. The hospital's facility, located southwest of Downtown Miami off U.S. Route 1, serves pet owners throughout Miami, Pinecrest, Cutler Bay, South Miami, and Kendall, and is also recognized as a certified Cat Friendly Practice. With the addition of the Senior Pet Care program, the hospital continues to expand services aimed at supporting pets through every stage of life, from puppy and kitten wellness visits to specialized care for senior companions.
