Locals Voted LLC today announced the launch of LocalsVoted, a new website where people vote for the best of their city in any category, from "Best Chole Bhature" to "Best Custom Cakes." Rankings come only from votes. Every vote is phone-verified, each person gets one vote per board per month, and no business can pay to rank higher. The site is live now in the Seattle area, with boards in Seattle, Bellevue, Kirkland, Lynnwood and Woodinville.

The idea began when founder Dishika Singh went looking for Delhi-style chole bhature in Greater Seattle. The "best Indian restaurant" lists she found ranked restaurants as a whole, so none of them pointed her to the one dish she wanted. "I realized I didn't want 'Best Indian Restaurant.' I wanted 'Best Chole Bhature,' and I wanted my friends to tell me, not an ad," said Singh. "My husband told me I could build it by talking to Claude, the AI assistant. I explained the problem and what I wanted the site to do, and I had a working version in about a day."

LocalsVoted is built around boards. A board is one question for one place, such as "Best Donuts in Seattle." There are no star ratings, reviews or editors; the number next to a place is simply the number of people who voted for it. Voters sign in with a US mobile number, get one vote per board each month, and each board shows its top ten. Monthly and yearly winners are published on their own pages. Anyone can start a board for $1 or add a place for free, and new boards and places are reviewed before they go live.

Businesses cannot pay for rank or placement. A business can claim its page and buy extras such as photos, but nothing it buys changes the order. "Most 'best of' lists are either paid placements or review pages that anyone can game," said Singh. "I wanted a list that locals build themselves, where the only way to rank higher is to be voted for."

To help new boards get started, Locals Voted LLC is offering free board coupons to local creators and business owners who want to start a board for their niche. The company built LocalsVoted with free Azure credits from Microsoft for Startups and plans to open boards in more cities and categories as locals ask for them.
