Manchester, England - April 2026 - Stain Kings, the Greater Manchester-based professional carpet and upholstery cleaning company, has analysed eight years of residential job records to identify the ten most common carpet stains treated across Greater Manchester homes between 2018 and 2026.
The dataset covers over 1,500 completed home cleans spanning every M, BL, OL, SK and WN postcode district. Each job record includes stain type, carpet fibre, property type and location - providing what the company believes is one of the most detailed independently held pictures of real-world carpet stain patterns in the Manchester region.
The Top 10 - Manchester's Most Common Carpet Stains 2018 to 2026
Ground-in dirt and mud - appeared on 74 percent of all jobs
Tea and coffee - 61 percent
Pet urine and pet-related odour - 53 percent
Red wine - 47 percent
Food and cooking grease - 39 percent
Blood - 28 percent
Ink and dye transfer - 22 percent
Candle wax - 18 percent
Paint and adhesive - 14 percent
Baby formula and milk - 11 percent
"Ground-in dirt topping the list will not surprise anyone who lives in Manchester," said Stain Kings founder Jacob Dowe. "Greater Manchester receives above-average annual rainfall compared to most English cities. That means more moisture, more mud and more soil tracked through hallways and living rooms on a daily basis - particularly across period properties in Didsbury, Chorlton and Fallowfield where front doors open directly onto the street with no porch or vestibule."
Patterns by Area and Property Type
The data revealed notable geographic and property-type patterns across the region. Pet urine and odour stains were most concentrated in family homes across the SK postcode areas covering Stockport, Cheadle, Bramhall and Marple - where larger properties with gardens and higher pet ownership rates drive demand for specialist enzymatic treatment.
Red wine stains appeared most frequently in south Manchester postcodes M20 and M21 covering Didsbury and Chorlton, and across the WA postcode areas of Altrincham, Hale and Timperley. Tea and coffee stains were the most evenly distributed across the entire coverage area with no significant geographic concentration.
End of tenancy jobs in the Salford Quays, Deansgate and Ancoats rental market - predominantly new-build apartments with light-coloured synthetic carpets - showed a disproportionately high rate of food and grease staining, ink and dye transfer, and ground-in dirt in hallway areas.
"Light-coloured polypropylene carpets are standard in most new-build rental apartments across the city centre and Salford Quays," said Dowe. "They show absolutely everything. A single coffee spill or a pair of muddy trainers can leave marks that no amount of scrubbing with a shop-bought product will shift. That is why end of tenancy carpet cleaning is one of our busiest service categories."
DIY Treatment - The Most Common Mistake
The job records also revealed a consistent pattern of DIY stain treatment making the original problem worse. Dowe estimates that approximately one in three jobs involved carpets where the homeowner had previously attempted removal using supermarket carpet cleaning products, household detergents or excessive scrubbing before calling a professional.
"The single most common mistake we see is over-wetting a stain with a retail carpet cleaner and then scrubbing it aggressively," said Dowe. "That pushes the stain deeper into the pile and spreads it outward. With wool carpets it can also cause fibre distortion that looks like permanent damage. In most cases, blotting gently with a clean white cloth and calling a professional promptly gives the best outcome."
Stain Kings technicians use specialist spotting solutions manufactured by Prochem Europe - the UK's leading professional carpet care chemical supplier - and are trained in advanced stain treatment techniques through the National Carpet Cleaners Association and The Association of Carpet Cleaning Agents. The company also holds WoolSafe Approved Service Provider status for safe treatment of wool and natural fibre carpets.
