Anku, a college student living in Greater Noida, believed that a strong hostel Wi-Fi password was enough to shield his digital life. Like millions of students across India, he frequently recycled the same password across multiple platforms, downloaded cracked software for college assignments, and connected to unsecured public Wi-Fi networks at popular cafés near Delhi NCR.

His illusion of safety shattered in less than twenty-four hours. First, his Instagram account was hijacked, followed by a series of unauthorized, fraudulent UPI transactions that completely drained his bank account.

Anku’s story is no longer an isolated incident. It represents a dangerous, rapidly growing epidemic across India's educational hubs. As the student workforce integrates deeper into the digital economy through online classes, coding bootcamps, remote internships, crypto trading, digital payments, and generative applications, they have inadvertently emerged as prime targets for cybercriminals.

Cybersecurity experts warn that attackers are no longer just targeting massive corporations. Instead, they are actively exploiting ordinary internet users with weak digital hygiene. Students often become the easiest victims due to three critical factors: absolute convenience, lack of real-world threat awareness, and digital overconfidence.

Currently, India is witnessing an unprecedented surge in targeted cyber risks, including malignant public Wi-Fi setups designed to intercept personal data, highly sophisticated phishing scams that perfectly mimic official bank alerts, and malicious software clones embedded with hidden malware. To safeguard the next generation of India’s tech workforce, security research labs are emphasizing the urgent need for defensive digital education, multi-factor authentication, and proactive network monitoring habits.
