TilBuci is an interactive content creation tool focused on development for web, mobile and desktop apps. Distributed as free software under the MPL-2.0 license, it is presented in the form of a cloud software, executed from a browser with functionalities for collective creation, as a portable desktop software for various systems and also as a WordPress plugin to simplify content publishing. HISTORY
The software is created from the experience of its developer, Lucas Junqueira, in the production of digital publications in several supports. He has always been dedicated to the area of publications, starting in the production of teaching materials in the sciences area, working with book publishers, after specializing in journalism, took the work on other areas of knowledge. By joining the team of the Ciclope digital publishing atelier, he began to focus on this type of support, developing works ranging from cultural content websites to the creation of cd-roms, dvds and multimedia installations for events and exhibition spaces such as museums.
Realizing a demand for specific tools for these creations, the development of the free software Managana began in 2012 and continued to be developed until the end of the 2010s, used in the production of several publications involving electronic magazines, mobile apps and audiovisual installations. At the end of 2024, he resumes the idea, now developing the TilBuci software, which is based on all of Managana's experiences, adapting to more contemporary technologies and proposals and focusing on web standards.
FEATURES
TilBuci is presented as a web tool to be used from a server, providing a collective creation environment inspired by software such as Wordpress or Joomla. Operating from browsers makes TilBuci similarly accessible on a variety of platforms, from desktop computers to tablets. In addition, this multi-user proposal meets the current needs of collective creation. The tool also has portable desktop versions to meet individual work demands.
Using a filmmaking metaphor, creators produce their "movies" that are split into "scenes", each one with its "keyframes". Unlike traditional movies, however, the display of scenes and keyframes is not linear and can be tailored to the interactions of content visitors. TilBuci has a system for creating actions for these interactions that does not require the use of code but, at the same time, allows the implementation of advanced features such as variable/data management, local and cloud storage, visitor login, event registration, remote processing and much more.
Adding all these features, the software is proposed to be a tool capable of creating various types of content that go through websites, magazines, material for public exhibitions, narrative games and much more.
TILBUCI SHOWTIME
Exhibitions, such as those seen in museums or events, have much to gain from the use of interactive digital resources, such as totems, kiosks, or projections. However, producing this type of material can become complex, especially when considering the challenges of installing the content on the devices used. TilBuci Showtime is an answer to this problem. It is a software for various systems (Windows, Linux, macOS, and Android) that allows movies created in TilBuci to be easily used in this context. The Showtime application offers several features, such as automatic start and kiosk mode, essential for these cases. In addition, communication with hardware compatible with the Arduino platform is also available, not only to receive more sophisticated interactions, but also to allow association with the exhibition's scenography, which can then respond to the interactions made by visitors. Showtime originally works completely offline, but it can also be connected to a TilBuci installation to gain several online functionalities, ranging from usage statistics records to remote content management of exhibitions. NARRATIVE GAMES
TilBuci pays special attention to the creation of narrative games, such as visual novels. To this end, the software has several tools that assist in the production of this type of content.
• Dialogue creation: a tool to simplify the creation of dialogues between characters in a format common to visual novels.
• Multilinear narrative: it is possible to easily include branching paths in the created stories, facilitating the generation of multiple paths.
• Inventory: tracking of accumulated items and their use by the user/player.
• Card battle: a simplified confrontation system to add complexity to narratives, with simple configuration to suit the theme of the production.
PUBLICATION
When operated in multi-user mode, installed on a server, TilBuci has a natural player allowing visitors to check out the content produced even while it is being created (the software has versioning tools to manage simultaneous development and visualization). In addition, TilBuci has several exporters focused on distribution in various forms, such as websites, mobile apps, desktop software and publishing on distribution services such as Itch.io or Game Jolt.
ACCESSIBILITY
To broaden the reach of content created using TilBuci, the tool has several accessibility-focused features, accessed through actions. The first is the application of color shaders, not to "correct" colors, but to improve their perception by people with color vision deficiency. A second feature is the focus mode, designed to reduce the activity and saturation of colors in less important elements on the screen. Finally, TilBuci has an action that sends a descriptive text that can be captured by the page where the content is included, and can be used, for example, by screen readers, such as sign language readers.
TECHNOLOGIES
TilBuci is created using the Haxe/OpenFL combination and is finalized in the form of a Javascript file compatible with all standard browsers. All content created on TilBuci is also exported this way, always using web technologies, such as WebGL – even apps are created this way, using technologies such as Electron or Ionic Capacitor.
LICENSE
TilBuci is free software licensed under the Mozilla Public License 2.0 (MPL-2.0). The tool's code repository can be found at https://github.com/lucasjunqueira-var/tilbuci
NAME
The name of the software is inspired by a very fun (and most of the time quite insane) puppy named Buci, who is always around giving (or not) support.
