Sundarbans, West Bengal: Tour De Sundarbans has launched a new monsoon travel package built around its Sundarbans eco resort on Satjelia island, offering travellers a season most visitors overlook and a delta that looks entirely different once the rains arrive.
The monsoon package centres on the eco village stay, with river cruising, hand boat sailing through narrow channels, and village walks across the island. Guests travel from Kolkata by road to Godkhali before transferring by boat, arriving at a delta that is at its greenest and considerably quieter than in peak winter.
"The monsoon is the Sundarbans at its most alive, and almost nobody sees it," a Tour De Sundarbans spokesperson said. "The mangroves are dense, the light on the water is extraordinary, and there are far fewer boats on the river. For photographers and for anyone who wants the place to themselves, this is the season. We built the package around the eco village so guests can slow down rather than chase a schedule."
The operator says the package suits travellers who want an atmosphere over checklists. Hand boat sailing, which takes guests into channels the larger launches cannot enter, remains the centrepiece, alongside the Bonobibi Pala folk drama performed at the eco village by artistes from the delta.
The package is available as a group booking or as a Sundarban private tour, with private bookings allowing departures timed to the tide table rather than to a fixed group schedule. Itineraries are built around tide movement, which changes what is navigable through the day.
Accommodation options at the six acre property range from organic cottages to premium rooms, with meals prepared largely from produce and fish sourced on the island.
