Bonham, TX – July 30th 2026: New homes across the Dallas-Fort Worth area are getting smaller, with tighter lots and less outdoor space becoming the new normal. After Texas removed minimum lot size requirements for many new subdivisions, homeowners are finding it more challenging to fit everything they need, including a safe room, on their property.
In response, Safe Rooms US has introduced a compact above-ground storm shelter designed specifically for limited spaces. The new model gives homeowners with smaller yards a safe, code-compliant shelter option without requiring the larger installation area that traditional shelters often need.
The new model offers the same durable steel construction and wind-resistant engineering as Safe Rooms US's standard shelters but in a compact design that fits narrow yards and small garage spaces. Like the rest of the company's above-ground shelters, the compact model is built to meet FEMA's safe room guidance and the ICC 500 standard for storm shelters, and it can typically be installed within seven to ten days of a finalized order.
"We kept hearing from homeowners on smaller lots who assumed a safe room simply wasn't an option for their property," said a spokesperson for Safe Rooms US. "This model gives them the same steel construction and the same FEMA-aligned protection as our larger shelters, just sized to fit a smaller footprint. Families shouldn't have to choose between protection and the amount of yard they have to work with."
The compact model joins Safe Rooms US's existing range of shelters, with sizes available for individuals, families, and larger households. Every shelter is built to withstand EF5 tornadoes, has passed the Texas Tech Impact Test, and is available for homeowners throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area and Oklahoma.
