UAE Extends Small Business Relief Under Corporate Tax to 2029, Giving SMEs a Longer Runway to Plan, Says Virtual CFO

The UAE’s extension of Small Business Relief under Corporate Tax to 2029 gives eligible SMEs more time to plan, manage cash flow, and prepare for future tax obligations strategically.

Dubai, UAE: 01 Sep 2026: The UAE Ministry of Finance has extended Small Business Relief under the Corporate Tax regime to cover tax periods ending on or before December 31, 2029, giving eligible small businesses and start-ups several additional years of simplified tax treatment. Virtual CFO, a UAE-based financial advisory firm supporting SMEs across the region, says the extension gives business owners a rare and welcome window to plan ahead with more certainty.
The change was introduced through Ministerial Decision No. 131 of 2026, announced by the Ministry on August 7. It amends the earlier decision governing the taxation of corporations and businesses, pushing out the window during which eligible companies can elect for Small Business Relief. The AED 3 million annual revenue threshold, originally set under Ministerial Decision No. 73 of 2023, remains unchanged.
What the Extension Means for SMEs
Under Small Business Relief, eligible UAE Resident Persons with revenue of AED 3 million or less can elect to be treated as having no taxable income for Corporate Tax purposes, significantly reducing both their tax liability and the administrative burden of calculating taxable income each year. Until now, this relief was set to run out in the near term. The extension removes that pressure and gives qualifying businesses a clear runway through the end of the decade.
Eligibility Still Comes with Conditions
Virtual CFO notes that the AED 3 million threshold, on its own, does not guarantee eligibility. A business is excluded from claiming Small Business Relief if it qualifies as a Qualifying Free Zone Person, or if it forms part of a Multinational Enterprise Group with consolidated group revenue exceeding AED 3.15 billion. Free zone businesses in particular should confirm their Corporate Tax status before assuming the relief applies to them.
The election is also optional, not automatic. Businesses that choose not to apply for Small Business Relief retain the ability to carry forward tax losses and eligible net interest expenditure, a consideration that matters for companies expecting stronger profitability in future years or planning a longer-term tax position.
Why This Matters Beyond Compliance
SMEs make up the overwhelming majority of businesses in the UAE and are a significant contributor to the country's non-oil economy. For many of these businesses, the extended relief period translates into real, practical savings, reducing the tax and compliance load at a stage of growth when cash flow and administrative capacity are often most stretched.
Virtual CFO advises SME owners to treat this extension as an opportunity to revisit their broader financial planning, not just their tax filing. A longer relief window changes the calculus around growth investment, hiring, and long-term structuring decisions, but only for businesses that take the time to confirm their eligibility and plan around it deliberately, rather than assuming the benefit applies automatically.
