Viridian Artists is pleased to present FOUR SEASONS, a solo exhibition of evocative mixed-media paintings by American artist BERNICE FAEGENBURG. The exhibition will be on view from May 12 through May 30, 2026. An Opening Reception will be held on Saturday, May 16, from 4 to 6 PM, followed by a Closing Reception on Saturday, May 30, from 4 to 6 PM.
In FOUR SEASONS, BERNICE FAEGENBURG brings together expansive large-scale works and more intimate compositions, each attuned to the rhythms of the natural world. Her paintings move fluidly between Western and Eastern traditions, where abstraction and figuration converge, meeting the grace of the calligraphic line. Gesture and image intertwine, giving rise to a visual language that is at once immersive and contemplative, grounded in a deep reverence for nature and its continual transformations.
This reverence is rooted in memory. Raised in a modest row house in North Philadelphia, Faegenburg grew up in a landscape largely devoid of trees, her contact with nature limited to a small box of morning glories lovingly built by her father. From this absence emerged a lifelong devotion to the natural world. In her work, nature takes precedence: spring unfolds in renewal, summer ripens into fullness, autumn turns in a vibrant kaleidoscope of color, and winter settles into stillness.
Faegenburg’s abstract expressionist paintings integrate elements of Asian brushwork and calligraphy within a rich mixed-media practice that includes collage, photo transfer, computer imaging, and silkscreen. Her compositions, often baroque in spirit, are filled with motifs of the natural world that emerge and dissolve within fields of color and gesture, creating a visual language that balances serenity and movement.
For Faegenburg, process is as vital as outcome. She approaches artmaking instinctively, allowing her images to evolve from daily experience. Her work seamlessly melds figuration with abstraction, resulting in compositions that feel both structured and spontaneous. Driven by experimentation and a deep sensitivity to line, texture, and material, she unites contrasting elements into a distinctive and cohesive whole.
The four seasons unfold vividly throughout the exhibition. Spring is captured in works such as "Exploding Spring Evening," a vibrant mixed-media triptych filled with bursts of color, birds, and blossoming forms that evoke the energy of renewal. Summer is embodied in "Hamptons Pine," a large-scale diptych whose upper section depicts a woodland with a mountainous backdrop, while the lower section presents sunlit scenes of coastal life. Autumn finds expression in "Autumn Quilt," a monumental, grid-based diptych layered with gestural brushstrokes, muted seasonal tones, and collage elements that suggest memory and transformation. Winter is conveyed through works such as "East Hampton Night," a large triptych shaped to be hung like a fan, depicting the night sky and its constellations in deep, resonant blues.
In balancing figuration and abstraction, she invites viewers into immersive landscapes where memory, nature, and imagination meet. As art writer Ed McCormack notes, her “visual vocabulary is equal to the depth and breadth of her passions.”
