Why Your Circuit Breaker Keeps Tripping in Singapore (And What to Do About It)
By VMG Electrical, 24/7 electrician services across Singapore
You are cooking dinner or running the air-conditioner on a hot evening, and suddenly the lights go out. You walk to the distribution board, flip the breaker back up, and everything works again. Then, an hour later, it trips again.
A circuit breaker that keeps tripping is not just an annoyance. It is your home's safety system telling you that something is wrong. In this guide, we explain why breakers trip in Singapore homes and offices, what you can safely check yourself, and when it is time to call an electrician.
What a Circuit Breaker Actually Does
The breakers in your distribution board (DB) are designed to cut power the moment a circuit becomes unsafe. Most Singapore homes have two types of protection:
• MCB (miniature circuit breaker): protects each circuit from overloads and short circuits.
• ELCB or RCCB (earth leakage protection): cuts power when it detects current leaking to earth, which can happen when a person, appliance or damaged wire creates an unsafe path.
When either device trips, it is doing its job. Resetting it again and again without finding the cause is like silencing a smoke alarm without checking for fire.
The Most Common Reasons a Breaker Trips
1. Overloaded Circuits
This is the most frequent cause. Running an air-conditioner, water heater, washing machine and oven on the same circuit can draw more current than the wiring and breaker are rated for. The breaker trips to prevent the cables from overheating.
If your breaker trips mainly when several heavy appliances run together, overload is the likely cause.
2. Short Circuits
A short circuit happens when a live wire touches a neutral or earth wire. The current surges instantly and the breaker trips at once, often with a loud click, and sometimes with a spark or burning smell. Loose connections, damaged insulation and faulty sockets are common culprits.
3. Earth Leakage Faults
If the earth leakage breaker is the one tripping, current is escaping somewhere. Aged wiring, moisture in a socket, or a failing appliance can cause this. Bathrooms, kitchens and balconies are common trouble spots in Singapore because of humidity and water exposure.
4. A Faulty Appliance
Sometimes the house wiring is fine and a single appliance is the problem. A worn heating element in a water heater, a failing compressor in a fridge or an ageing washing machine can all trip the breaker as soon as they switch on.
5. Loose or Damaged Wiring
Older HDB flats and condos may have wiring that has deteriorated over the years. Loose terminals in sockets, switches or the DB itself can cause overheating and intermittent tripping that is hard to trace without proper testing.
6. A Worn-Out Breaker
Breakers do not last forever. An old or damaged breaker can trip even when the load is normal. This is less common than the causes above, so it should only be concluded after the circuit has been properly tested.
A Simple Safe Check You Can Do
You do not need to open anything to do the following:
1. Switch off and unplug the appliances on the affected circuit.
2. Reset the breaker once.
3. Plug in appliances one at a time. If the breaker trips when a particular appliance is connected, that appliance is likely the problem.
4. Notice when it trips: immediately, after a few minutes, or only when it rains or the air-conditioner starts. This information helps your electrician find the fault faster.
If the breaker trips even with everything unplugged, the problem is likely in the wiring, a socket or the distribution board itself.
Warning Signs: Stop and Call an Electrician
Do not keep resetting the breaker if you notice any of these:
• Sparks from a socket or switch
• A burning smell near outlets or the DB
• Sockets or switches that feel hot to the touch
• Buzzing or crackling sounds
• Flickering lights together with repeated tripping
• Water near electrical points
These can point to overheating or damaged wiring, which is a fire and shock risk. Stop using the affected point and get it inspected as soon as possible.
What You Should Not Do
• Do not tape or force a breaker to stay on. It removes the protection that prevents fires.
• Do not replace a breaker with a higher-rated one. The cables behind it may not be able to carry the extra current.
• Do not open the distribution board or work on fixed wiring yourself. Electrical installation work in Singapore must be carried out by a Licensed Electrical Worker (LEW) or under an LEW's supervision.
How an Electrician Finds the Cause
A qualified electrician does not guess. The usual process is:
1. Ask when and how the tripping happens.
2. Isolate each circuit and test it for insulation faults and earth leakage.
3. Check sockets, switches and connections for loose terminals or damage.
4. Test the load on the circuit and check whether it suits the breaker rating.
5. Repair or replace the faulty component, then test the system again before leaving.
Depending on what is found, the solution might be as simple as replacing a damaged socket, or as involved as adding a dedicated circuit for an air-conditioner or rewiring a section of an older home.
When Rewiring or an Upgrade Makes Sense
If your home is older, has been renovated with extra appliances, or trips repeatedly across several circuits, the wiring may no longer match how you use electricity today. In that case, adding circuits or rewiring can be the safer long-term fix compared to repeated patch repairs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to keep resetting a tripping breaker? Resetting it once to check is fine. If it trips again, stop and get the cause checked, because repeated resets can hide a real fault.
Why does my breaker trip when it rains? Moisture can get into outdoor sockets, balcony lights or damaged wiring and cause earth leakage. It is worth having those points inspected.
Can an air-conditioner trip the breaker? Yes. A dirty or failing air-conditioner can draw excess current, and a circuit shared with other appliances can overload when the compressor starts.
Does a tripping breaker always mean something is wrong with my wiring? Not always. It can be a single faulty appliance. A proper test is the only reliable way to tell.
Do you offer emergency service? Yes, VMG Electrical accepts 24-hour enquiries in Singapore. Attendance time depends on your location and technician availability.
