Weather Alerts, a free weather app for Android, gives users direct control over when they are notified about the weather. Instead of relying only on generic forecasts, people can define their own alert thresholds for each saved location, so a notification arrives only when conditions matter to them.
Personal thresholds for every place
Users can save several locations, such as home, work, a holiday cottage or a parent's town, and set separate limits for each one. Supported alert types include:
- Rain amount in millimetres
- Wind speed and gusts
- Heat and frost
- Snow
- UV index
- Air quality (AQI and PM2.5) and wildfire smoke
- Thunderstorms and lightning
- Aurora activity based on the Kp index
Because forecasts are checked against these personal limits, alerts can arrive days ahead, giving users time to move an outdoor event, protect plants from frost or prepare for a windy commute.
Official warnings and travel
Alongside the personal thresholds, Weather Alerts shows official severe weather warnings for the user's locations. The app can also display weather along a route, which helps drivers and travellers see what conditions to expect on the way, not just at the destination.
Notifications on the user's terms
A quiet hours setting lets users mute non-urgent notifications at night or during meetings. The core app is free to use, and an optional Premium subscription is available with a 7-day free trial.
"We wanted people to decide for themselves what counts as bad weather, because a light breeze for one person is a problem for another," said the Weather Alerts team.
