Jennifer Hadley Photography has announced its 2026 Katmai bear photography season, structured as two small-group wildlife photography expeditions in Katmai National Park, Alaska.

The season has been intentionally divided to align with distinct phases of coastal brown bear activity across the Alaskan summer, offering photographers two clearly defined field experiences within the same remote ecosystem.

Early Summer: Coastal Movement and Environmental Context

The first expedition, scheduled for early July, focuses on brown bear movement across tidal flats and shoreline environments. During this period, bears are frequently observed foraging, interacting, and traveling through open coastal terrain. The photographic emphasis centers on environmental portraiture, behavioral documentation, and working with extended northern daylight conditions.

Peak Season: Salmon Run Intensity

The second expedition, taking place from late July into early August, coincides with the height of the salmon run. During this phase, brown bears gather along creeks and river systems to fish and compete, creating concentrated wildlife activity and dynamic photographic opportunities.

Direct In-Field Mentorship

Unlike larger workshop-style tours, the Katmai expeditions prioritize direct, in-field guidance. Participants work directly with Jennifer Hadley, a professional photographer, throughout each field session, receiving real-time instruction on wildlife behavior, positioning, composition, and technical execution.

Field time is structured to allow photographers to refine settings, anticipate movement, and adapt to changing light conditions under continuous professional oversight. The small-group format allows for individual attention and flexibility in daily planning.

Both expeditions operate from a remote wilderness camp accessible by bush plane and are supported by professionally trained bear guides. Daily plans remain responsive to environmental conditions, allowing photographers to maximize time in productive locations.

Availability

Each expedition is offered separately, with limited availability maintained throughout the season to preserve safety, low-impact operations, and photographic integrity.
