From Polite Neighborliness to Property Line Warfare, “Native Gardens” Digs Into Modern Cultural Clashes

A fast-paced comedy unearths timely conversations about class, identity, and what it really means to belong

A fence. A few disputed feet of property. A prize rose bush. In the hands of playwright Karen Zacarías, these are the ingredients for all-out suburban war.

Woodinville Repertory Theatre's production of “Native Gardens” explores what happens when good intentions collide with deeply rooted beliefs, with sharp humor and escalating tension that reveals how even the most well-meaning neighbors can find themselves on opposite sides of an uncrossable line.

Set in a well-manicured Washington, D.C. neighborhood, the play follows two couples whose differences, cultural, generational, and ideological, come to a head over a seemingly simple dispute: a property line. As plans for a native garden clash with a prize-winning traditional yard, the play blossoms into a hilarious yet thought-provoking exploration of privilege, identity, and the invisible boundaries we draw around ourselves. Funny, sharp, and disarmingly relatable, “Native Gardens” shows how easily civility can unravel when personal values are put to the test.

"Native Gardens is one of the funniest plays I've read, but what keeps drawing me back is how honest it is," says director Alicia Mendez. "These characters all believe they're the reasonable one in the room, and that's exactly what makes it so relevant right now."

Audiences can upgrade their evening through Woodinville Repertory Theatre's signature dinner theatre partnership with The Restaurant at DeLille Cellars. A thoughtfully curated multi-course meal perfectly complements the performance, creating a seamless blend of exceptional cuisine and live theatre. Set in the heart of Woodinville Wine Country, this immersive experience is ideal for date nights, group outings, or special occasions.

Woodinville Repertory Theatre continues its tradition of producing work that entertains while engaging the mind, offering an intimate, welcoming space where stories spark connection, conversation, and community long after the curtain falls.
