From the 1950s to Today, Perfect Arrangement Uses Satire to Confront LGBTQ+ and Gender Norms

A sharp-witted dark comedy from the Lavender Scare era sheds light on modern conversations about identity, conformity, and courage

What if the “perfect” 1950s life was just a carefully staged illusion? Woodinville Repertory Theatre’s production of Perfect Arrangement by Topher Payne explores this question through biting humor and bold satire, pulling back the curtain on an era of deep repression and the enduring relevance of its themes today.

Set against the backdrop of the Lavender Scare, the play follows two U.S. State Department employees and their spouses as they lead double lives, outwardly promoting a purge of “deviants,” while secretly shielding their own identities. As their façades begin to crumble, Perfect Arrangement cleverly shifts from sitcom-style farce to provocative social commentary.

“Perfect Arrangement may take place decades ago, but it speaks directly to the way many of us still navigate the world, deciding what parts of ourselves feel safe to share and what parts we keep hidden,” says Jay Stratton, director of Perfect Arrangement.

With its combination of laughter and unease, Perfect Arrangement invites audiences to examine how far we've come, and how much remains at stake, in the fight for authenticity, equality, and human dignity.
Woodinville Repertory Theatre continues its tradition of producing work that entertains while engaging the mind, all within an intimate, welcoming setting that sparks conversation long after the curtain falls.
