From Domestic Recovery to International Growth, Nordic Motorhome Tourism Shows Remarkable Market Flexibility.

Research by Elle Tick tracks how Nordic motorhome tourism adapted during the pandemic and recovered as international travel returned, highlighting the sector’s flexibility and changing demand patterns.

A Market Which Shifted As Traveling Habits Changed.

The Nordic motorhome hire sector was among the areas where client base witnessed the most significant changes during the pandemic period. It illustrated how adaptable the nature of road-based tourism was when the prevailing traveling patterns were disrupted.

Part of the research associated with the Elle Tick's dissertation analyzed rentals on multiple year basis and documented a transition from strong international customer dependence to a temporary domestic customer base followed by a growth of international rentals again.

International clients were a central pillar in the Nordic motorhome rental market even before the Covid-19 pandemic. They constituted close to 80 % in 2017 and about 84% in 2019 of the overall clientele in the sector.

Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands and France were the top client origins for these motorhome rentals.

The market generated approximately 2,290 included rentals in 2019. 65% of rental clients were families, couples constituting the remaining 35% segment of the clientele.

The average rental duration spanned for about 12 days.

Then, the market abruptly transformed itself.

With a downturn of 1,257 in the number of included rentals in 2020, international mobility became a critical threat for travel firms dependent on cross-border tourists owing to travel restrictions.

However, market didn't disappear.

It started taking the road-based tourists from local origins, instead.

The client base share shifted dramatically with the proportion of local customers taking the rise from nearly 16% to around 53% in 2020. Locals constituted nearly 47% of included rentals in 2021.

This fleeting transformation exemplified flexibility of motorhome-based tourism and capacity of road users to keep journeying with motor homes domestically without their international mobility being an issue.

The phase of resurgence also witnessed another paradigm shift.

In 2022, the rental market registered foreign customers representing nearly 86%, confirming return of cross-border clientele to the market.

The return, however, wasn't the 'end' of story.

Rental period increased.

From close to 12 days in 2019, average rental duration prolonged to about 12.7 days in 2021, growing to 14.3 days in 2022 and sustaining around 14 days until 2025.

The changing demographics of the market. Couples made up almost 46% of the total customer base as against 35% recorded earlier and compared to family clienteles representing 53% in 2025.

The observations lead one to concur that resurgence could be a precursor to the 'transformation' of the market.

It goes to prove an obvious lesson for businesses. Diversifying the client origin and demographics will reduce their vulnerability under any unpredictable changes in their surrounding global market. Diversified market strategy increases flexibility.

The Nordic motorhome market exemplifies how a disruption might force businesses to serve clienteles at home while keeping option of serving them abroad after all circumstances have normalized. The Elle Tick's research offers insight on the phenomenon and link between transaction data to broader travel changes. The analysis clearly states that resilience not only rests upon revival of past clients but also requires careful interpretation of their changing behaviours in the form of business response-readiness.
