The Rise of the Extended Nordic Road Trip.
The Nordic market for motorhome rentals is seeing something new: how customers use the vehicles, says research looking at Elle Tick's thesis. Alongside rising numbers of renters, something equally important is taking place, namely, travellers are staying with the vehicle for longer. Data on transactions from 2017 on shows an average of from roughly 12 days before the pandemic to 12.7 days in 2021, to 14.3 days in 2022, and from here on until 2025 will be around 14 days.
This is significant for motorhome rental companies, since a rental going from 12 to 14 days is far more than adding one or two days.
This actually represents a change in consumer behaviour. An extended rental gives customers the possibility to travel further, make longer stops and build more flexible plans around the outdoor experiences they look forward to. This has an impact of varying degrees on rental companies, ranging from preparing a vehicle to communicating with a customer. Even more significant given the international orientation of the market-foreign renters made up roughly 80 percent of bookings in 2017 and about 84 percent of rentals in 2019.
The largest source markets were Swiss, German, Netherlands and French renters.
International customers opting for an extended stay might desire further details before their departure, less hassle during the booking process, and more extensive support throughout the travel experience. However, the pandemic made some changes to customer groups. The number of bookings had shrunk from 2,290 to 1,257 in 2020.
But locals made a stronger presence-taking the part of foreign renters from some 16 percent in 2019 up to approximately 53 percent in 2020. The fact that the customer profile had expanded and was much more of a "local affair" showed that motorhomes are adaptable to changing mobility behaviours. In 2022 foreign renters returned much more strongly, now comprising approximately 86% of bookings.
At the same time the make up of customer was evolving; previously families were the main renters comprising about 65 percent of rentals in 2019, whereas couples was not quite one third – 35 percent.
But by 2025 couples became nearly 46%-suggesting an extended travel is a trend rather than single occasion experience for the market. Families can look forward to being offered convenience, enough space and flexibility, couples on the other hand want comfort, and independence combined with individual plans-international customers require assistance in planning trips across borders and getting specific destination information etc. And companies catering to this will find new possibilities for products, since families need very different things than solo travellers (e.g. Space vs.
Portability, shared kitchen etc.
Vs. Compact kitchen). Hence businesses can find even more service specific approaches.
Extended stays also means businesses will likely be looked upon for help not solely on a vehicular basis, but for travel advice as well, information on routes, itineraries and support; it is thus up to companies and researchers within the industry to stay updated on such trends. Research is showing that rental days is a meaningful indicator to get a read on market movements, and it will be very informative to track that, as the market evolves, in order for companies to shape competitive strategies.
