There is not one typical career. Lassy LL Chiwayo has learned that time spent in public service can, in the end, be a published commodity. His nonconventional career path has encompassed political activism, democratic representation, provincial administration, city governance, diplomacy, and book writing.

Chiwayo engaged in the liberation struggle during apartheid and was detained in 1985. He was incarcerated on Robben Island between 1987 and 1990. Since the advent of democratic government, he has taken on formal political and administrative positions.

He was a Senator of the Republic of South Africa representing Mpumalanga from 1994-1996. He was the MEC for Sports, Culture and Recreation from 1996-1997. And the MEC for Finance in the Mpumalanga from 1997-1999.

Between 1999 and 2001, Chiwayo served as the Chief Whip of the Mpumalanga Legislature. The role gave him yet more institutional experience and added the dimensions of legislative management and institutional leadership to his emerging public-service career.

His career expanded into municipal government. He was the Executive Mayor of the Mbombela Local Municipality from 2008 to 2011, during a time of growth for the city with Mbombela hosting part of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Following his career in private sector, Chiwayo advanced to the realm of diplomacy. He served for a year from 2011 to 2012 as officer for Central East Asia and organizations of the area.
