Lassy LL Chiwayo has built a professional journey across several spheres of public life, from the liberation struggle and democratic politics to provincial administration, municipal governance, diplomatic service, and publishing.

His early political involvement took place during the apartheid era. Chiwayo was arrested in 1985 and imprisoned on Robben Island from 1987 to 1990. After South Africa’s democratic transition, his career moved into the country’s new political and institutional landscape.

Chiwayo served as a Senator representing Mpumalanga between 1994 and 1996. He then served as MEC for Sports, Culture and Recreation before becoming MEC for Finance from 1997 to 1999. These positions gave him experience across public administration, cultural and sports development, provincial governance, and financial responsibilities.

From 1999 to 2001, he served as Chief Whip of the Mpumalanga Legislature. His career later moved into municipal government when he became Executive Mayor of Mbombela Local Municipality from 2008 to 2011.

The period included preparations for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, placing municipal administration and development under significant international attention. Chiwayo’s subsequent diplomatic service added another dimension to his professional career, including responsibilities involving Central East Asia and regional organisations between 2011 and 2012.
