Personalization May Be Key to the Next Phase of Nordic Motorhome Rentals.
Nordic motorhome rental market The Nordic motorhome rental business is diversifying, bringing new avenues for businesses to think creatively about the customer experience. Evidence drawn from Elle Tick’s research on motorhome rental patterns shows that customer behaviours have changed regarding origin, group type, and duration of stay, potentially pushing the market into future travel services that necessitate personalization. Prior to the pandemic, it would have been impossible to ignore international customers of Nordic motorhomes.
In 2017 80 percent of bookings came from outside Nordics, rising in 2019 to a significant 84 percent.
These numbers included customers from source markets including Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, and France, for instance. Within these rental groups, families made up an average of 65 percent of rentals compared with 35 percent made by couples in 2019 and 65percentmadebycouplesin2025. In 2019, the average age of vehicle drivers aged about 45–46 years old. For this market, clearly, the typical consumer profile was already a well-established one.
Customer needs differ: but not necessarily in any industry In a typical motorhome rental market segment, individuals may require something entirely different.
For families, having room space and an itinerary can be priorities. A couple looking to get away from the usual would look for luxury and the luxury of stopping when and where they wanted. And those travelling from a distance away can need information and planning in advance before starting their trip in the Nordics.
The importance of having a variety of offerings grows from increased number of couple customers to the market. In 2019, couples occupied just about 35 percent of bookings whereas they have more than doubled to take up to nearly 46percent of the Nordic market in 2025. The impact of global events was immediate on the geographic distribution.
Bookings made from outside the Nordics have plunged from 2,290 in 2019 to 1,257 in 2020; Simultaneously, bookings from local customers rocketed from just 16percent in 2019 to about53percent in 2020.
The market demonstrates that customer behaviour can change very rapidly as travel conditions change. International bookings rebounded as early as2022 with international customers now accounting for about 86 percent of all bookings. Another indicator The increase in rental length is another indicator. Nordic motorhome rentals averaged 12 days until the pandemic, rising in 2021 to about 12.7 and in 2022 reaching around 14.3 and holding steady to near 14 days through to 2025.
Longer trips can mean more customer requirements and needs as a customer using 12 or more days can require more information and access to a comprehensive list of equipment that would be needed for long trips, or access to services throughout the duration of the trip that will require communication and personalized advice on where to go.
This gives the industry the opportunity to move beyond a simple rental process and create customized service models that support personalized communication throughout all parts of the trip, right from the moment of booking, right through to return of vehicle and beyond. The overall research therefore suggests that a future-centric customer service model is needed forth Nordic motor home market to consider. Rather than treating every transaction the same, rental businesses should take a more holistic view of their customers, considering their origin, trip length, type of trip, and their specific travel objectives.
Elle Tick’s dissertation provides a comprehensive base from which to investigate customer behavioural changes and, as the Nordic motorhome market continues to evolve, this may prove to be critical as service quality, differentiation and personalization begin to play larger roles.
