Within the Nordic motorhome industry, these transactions provide an inside look at how travel habits have changed through the years. Research from Elle Tick’s PhD dissertation uses rental transaction data from 2017 – 2026 in search of meaningful patterns within customer origin, demographics, vehicle group size, and rental duration.
Nordic Motorhome Market Travel Trends One thing that is apparent is how much international is traveling the Nordic countries in their own motorhomes, in 2017, nearly 80% of rentals were international, 2019, almost 84% of rental customers were from outside of Nordic region such as Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, and France.
Cross-border travel is the backbone of a successful motorhome rental economy in Nordics Nordic motorhome customer demographics One aspect of travel that always produces solid market information is the demographic data of the customers. Through 2017 – 2019, the age of the main renter averages around45-46years of age indicating an experienced traveller who is prepared to experience more of the extended lifestyle benefits of a road-based experience, in 2019 65% of customers were families and 35% were in relationships(couples). The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact in 2020 and 2021, as there was significant reduction in customer overall. The number of included rental transactions decreased to 1257in 2020from2,290 in 2019 and included local customer increased from nearly 16%to almost 53%.
This shift reveals how nimble customer travel habits are in terms of responded to current events and external market conditions.
Once International travel ceased to be accessible for the populace, the local customer sustained the motorhome and related business. In 2021, 47% of Included rents were local, but there was tremendous recovery in 2022 with International travel nearly 86%. Rental duration Another key aspect discovered is the length of customer rental.
In general, rental days were about 12 days on average from 2017 -2019. In 2021 this extended to almost 12.7 days, and in 2022 was about 14.3 days. The length continues to remain near 14 Days until 2025, demonstrating a continuing trend of longer and more in-depth travel styles on the road.
Also, it reveals a market opportunity to develop services and enhance the customers’ extended, immersive travel experience, focusing on comfort, planning, and supported journey.
The changing makeup of groups by relationship shows increasing diversification in this market also. The percentage of couples rose to nearly46%by2025 from around35% in2019. This transformation of customer data into market intelligence goes beyond mere statistics.
