Nordic Motorhome Tourism Enters a New Phase as Longer Journeys Create Opportunities Beyond Vehicle Rental.

Growing rental durations in Nordic motorhome tourism suggest that operators can build broader customer experiences around journey planning, comfort, support and destination discovery.

A Business Opportunity for Longer Motorhome Hires.

Renting a motorhome is not just about supplying customers with a mode of transportation for a vacation. As they continue to journey for longer periods, the entire road trip experience becomes more important.

Research supporting Elle Tick’s dissertation highlights how this is playing out when you consider rental data for years of Nordic motorhome travel.

Prior to the global pandemic – the average rental period was around 12 days.

Following the global travel disruption, this increased to about 12.7 days in 2021 and 12.3 days in 2022. It remained close to 12 days through 2025.

This is a significant change in travel preferences.

Longer road trips may cause customers to more thoroughly think about road trips, destinations, equipment, comfort, and vehicle functionality. For motorhome hire businesses, this offers an opportunity to add customer experience that extends far beyond the initial booking.

Broader market data offers additional context on this evolution.

International customers accounted for around 80% of rentals in 2017 and close to 84% in 2019, with a large part of this stemming from such countries as Switzerland, Germany, Netherlands, and France.

In 2019 about 65% of included rentals were for families and just about 35% were for couples.

The pandemic brought about a temporary shift in the customer landscape.

Included rentals dropped from 2,290 in 2019 to just 1,257 in 2020. The volume of local customers rose from about 16% of rentals to about 53% at the same time.

Domestic demand stayed elevated in 2021 where local customers rose to about 47% of all included rentals. In 2022, however, the picture resumed normal flow as international customers again accounted for roughly 86% of rentals.

The makeup of customers also continued to change. Couples alone rose from about 35% in 2019 to just short of 46% in 2025. This indicates that modern motorhome hire customers may have varied expectations, depending upon the duration and type of trip they are taking.

Two-week excursions would probably necessitate far greater preparation than what a short-term hire would. Customers may seek direction, recommendations, equipment information, plus support on the road. International travellers particularly could benefit from a smooth transit, hence clarity on routes and destinations before embarking is paramount.

For couples, perhaps business owners might want to focus on comfort and flexibility while for the family travelling, practicality and space are still major concerns. Therefore, the research calls for a broader outlook into motorhome hire business operations. Although the vehicle is undoubtedly the core of it, the full road-tripping experience must accompany the rental process itself.

Elle Tick’s research confirms that trip duration can provide significant insight into a customer’s expectations of an evolving service offering.

If the companies providing motorhome hire in Scandinavia continue to recognise that their role goes well beyond a simple rental transaction, they can pioneer new and beneficial opportunities for customers.
