In Motherhood’s a Bloodsport, a fiercely protective mother faces impossible choices when she believes the system has failed her children, blurring the line between devotion and destruction.

What does it really mean to protect your child? And how far would a mother go when she believes the world has failed to keep them safe?
In Motherhood’s a Bloodsport, authors Jennifer Parnell and Lauren Talkemeyer explore these questions through the story of Norma Francesca, a fiercely devoted mother whose life is shaped by instinct, loyalty, and a relentless drive to keep her family secure. The novel blends psychological tension, domestic drama, and moral complexity, offering readers a portrait of motherhood that is both intimate and unsettling.
Originally inspired by an idea Jennifer carried for more than two decades, the book became a collaborative project between mother and daughter. “Life gets busy when you’re raising a family,” the authors share in their opening note. “When the time was right, we took that original idea and built it into something much bigger together.”
The story follows Norma as she navigates custody battles, strained relationships, and the everyday pressures of raising young children. She is not written as a traditional heroine. Instead, she is determined, reactive, protective, and often guided by instinct rather than reflection.
The novel’s early chapters establish the emotional stakes that drive Norma’s decisions. Readers see a woman shaped by past instability, driven by fear for her children’s safety, and convinced that the system cannot be trusted to protect them. These pressures form the foundation for the choices that follow, creating a character who is as compelling as she is unpredictable.
In conversation, the authors explain that Norma was never meant to be easily judged. “We wanted readers to sit with the uncomfortable questions,” they say. “When protection becomes the priority, where is the line? And who decides when it’s been crossed?”
The collaboration between Jennifer and Lauren also shapes the book’s perspective. Jennifer brings the long-held concept and lived experience of motherhood, while Lauren contributes a modern narrative pace and psychological depth. Together, their voices create a story that moves quickly while staying grounded in emotional realism.
Motherhood’s a Bloodsport is a character-driven psychological thriller for readers who enjoy morally complex protagonists, domestic suspense, and stories that challenge traditional ideas about family and protection.
About the Author
Jennife Parnell first imagined the story behind Motherhood’s a Bloodsport nearly 30 years ago while raising her young children. The idea stayed with her for decades until she finally had the time to write it after becoming a grandmother. Drawing from her experience as a school bus driver, her years of motherhood, and her lifelong love of reading and creative writing, Jennifer brings authenticity and emotional depth to the story.
She collaborated with her daughter, Lauren Talkemeyer, who has long been passionate about creative writing. After the birth of her first child in 2023, Lauren stepped away from her creative work, and this project became a way for her to reconnect with her passion and rediscover her voice during early motherhood.
Written between nap times and family life, the book reflects their shared experiences as mothers. Jennifer and Lauren also co-host a podcast about mom-life topics and share a love of apocalypse films and true crime, influences that helped shape the tone and tension of their collaborative debut.
