Comparing Capsule Endoscopy Vs. Traditional Endoscopy: Dr. Indraneel Saha’s Insights

Capsule endoscopy has revolutionised the diagnostic capabilities of surgeons, especially in the areas of the small intestine, which are difficult to reach by traditional endoscopy.

As advancements in technology are continuously shaping the medical world, capsule endoscopy has emerged as a new diagnostic tool to identify abnormalities in the gastrointestinal tract. Dr. Indraneel Saha, a leading gastroenterologist in Kolkata, shares his insights into the evolving role of capsule endoscopy over traditional ones.

Both techniques are used by doctors to evaluate the digestive tract, but the recent innovation in capsule technology has allowed greater comfort and more precise results.

“Capsule endoscopy has revolutionised the way gastroenterologists used to detect problems in the digestive tract. The procedure is non-invasive for patients and provides high-resolution, clear images, which help to identify the issues more accurately,“ says Dr. Indraneel Saha.

Where Lies The Difference?

Traditional endoscopy involves inserting a long and flexible tube with a camera attached down through the throat to examine the inner lining of the digestive tract. Though it is effective, it results in pain and discomfort. As a result, patients are required to be sedated using anaesthesia and often have a longer recovery time.

On the other hand, capsule endoscopy involves swallowing a pill-sized capsule with a camera inside that takes thousands of images as it travels through the gastrointestinal tract. The procedure is safe, well-tolerated, and does not require any sedation.

The main difference between the procedures is how they are performed and the patient experience. While normal endoscopy allows for intervention like polyp removal or biopsies, capsule endoscopy is used to detect hidden issues in the small intestine, which normal endoscopy can’t reach.

“Many patients refuse to undergo traditional endoscopy due to the discomfort involved. However, in capsule endoscopy, the anxiety is reduced to a great extent. All they need is to swallow a pill, which is eventually excreted through stool within 24 hours,“ says Dr. Saha.

When Is Capsule Endoscopy Recommended?

Capsule endoscopy is mostly recommended by doctors to diagnose the following disorders:

Unexplained GI bleeding

Crohn’s disease

Celiac disease

Small bowel tumours

Ulcerative colitis

The advantage of capsule endoscopy lies in its simplicity. The procedure is not a replacement for traditional endoscopy but rather is used as the first line of treatment where symptoms are difficult to diagnose with normal traditional endoscopy.
